Oh, what a great post! Can I have a go? (based on Luke 18)
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else Jesus told this parable.
Two men went up to pray, one a pioneer and the other a disfellowsipped exJW. The pioneer prayed 'Jehovah I thank you that I am not like other people, robbers, evildoers, adulterers and anyone who questions the faithful slave. I never miss meetings and do more than the required 70 hours a month.'
But the disfellowsipped exJW would not even look to heaven, he beat his breast and said 'God have mercy on me, a sinner'
I tell you that this man rather than the other went home justified before God, for all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all those who humble themselves will be exalted.

help with sociologist friend...
by losingit ini have a friend who is a sociologist.
this person does research on being gay and mormon, and will shortly come out with a book.
we had a lengthy discussion about cults (in general, and jws in particular), and basically the sociologist believes that all religions are cults.

losingit,
That's why I find the term 'abusive' better than 'cult'. When you use the word 'cult', particularly but apparently not exclusively with JWs, you often end up defending your use of the term with a pointless argument in semantics that detracts from the point you were trying to make in the first place, but when you say something like 'I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness and found it abusive' they're more likely to ask for details. Then you get to explain about the shunning without getting first bogged down in the semantics.

second study article July 15th 2013
by inbetween inlast weekend congos around the world studied the second artcile of the famous wt 15th july.. it dealt with the prohecy in matthew 13 about the weeds and the wheat.. while they claim, that the gathering in the storehouse took place after 1914, the gathering to the kingdom of heaven will be right before armageddon.
what they did not mention, was when the resurrection of already dead anointed will happen.
why some of them shine brightly in the kingdom, while others are still on earth ?.

Just this simple fact of life is proof of God....
by EndofMysteries ini'll be curious for any alternative plausible explanations for this...... .
every lifeform on earth, humans, plants, bacteria, cells, anything with life originated with other life.
all trees come from living seeds from other trees, etc.

Is the atheist's argument mainly, or firstly, based on what the Bible says or doesn't say?
I'd have thought both... depending on circumstances.

If all religions are cults than surely all social communities are cults?
This makes the word 'cult' meaningless. Though I happen to prefer 'abusive' or 'high control' anyway...

This is an example of argument from personal incredulity
Ah, ok. I'll try not to make that mistake again...

Something out of nothing, life from non-life, consciousness from no consciousness. Yeah, ok...
I like that bunny picture.

Lunacy or apostasy?
by Separation of Powers inover the years i have heard some really strange beliefs shared openly with others in the congregation.
one sister, for example, stated that you could not be cremated because then "all your molecules will be spread around and jehovah couldn't put you back together.
" kinda sounds like she got stuck in a nursery rhyme there, a la humpty dumpty.. .

Why did the Society have to tell the elder body to let the old lady be? Did the elder body enquire as to what they should do with her? That would be the real lunacy here.

What major WTBTS change(s) do you predict for 2014?
by ABibleStudent inwhat major wtbts change(s) do you predict for 2014 to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the wtbts's 1914 prediction?.
after posting to what's in it for them?
(gb), i started to think what major change(s) could the wtbts make to thin the flock and cleanse the congregations of social jws who do not donate or go to meetings.. my premise is that the wtbts is a business, a dangerous cult, and that its printing operations are losing money.

Hey Robert
If they change the 144,000 doctrine as literal and release a new bible at the AGM as has been predicted, I really can't see them implementing any other major changes in the short term, too many big chances might raise too many concerns.
Perhaps if the new bible loses them big money they'll consider ways to raise extra revenue but I don't think they'll jump straight to a mandatory tithe.
We'll see eh! I don't think anyone would have predicted the ridiculous 'overlapping generations' doctrine before it came out, so who knows!
