why are there more dead people and damage with katrina then andrew?
is it because of flood?.

hey marla!
glad you are ok!
yes, this storm affected a vast area....as pres. bush noted, an area the size of all of great britain. (p.s. - i am not a particular fan of pres. bush)
how would great britain have handled this if all of great britain was under water??
but this disaster does bring up a question: why do we humans (americans?) continue to tempt fate knowing well the potential dangers of...living in hurricane....earthquake...tornado...prone areas? do we just enjoy being in denial? do we think it will never happen to us?
best wishes to all, nowisee

Canadian Red Cross Response - Proud moments
by Uzzah ini met up with a group of 25 of the best and most experienced canadian red cross disaster response team members this morning at the toronto airport.
from there we took a bus to trenton military base where they boarded a flight to houston and from there they will be deployed across the 4 affected states.
another 12 had made other arrangements and were meeting up with them down in houston.

Would you bend over to pick up a penny on the ground? Or maybe a nickel?
by JH inyesterday evening i was taking a long walk, and then i saw a nickel (5 cents) on the sidewalk, so i didn't even bother to pick it up.
then walking away i was surprised that i didnt even pick it up.
i know that i would never pick up a penny, but a nickel, usually i do pick that up.

this is an amusing thread....
of course, i always pick up coins when i see them. it is even a subject of contemplation for me....i have often wondered just how much $ is laying on the ground of the earth at any given time....
anyway, some of my friends look at me crosseyed when i do this... i don't care. i have picked up mostly pennies, but on at least 2-3 occasions $5 bills. a couple of years ago i started to throw everything found into a bowl and now have around $14.
after watching the wayne dyer special on pbs on "the power of intention" i have now added a mantra every time i pick up even a penny: "thank you, Lord, for this symbol of abundance which constantly flows into my life."
it is a good, positive affirmation, and acknowledges the Provider of all things.

yes, i just don't understand.
why in the world couldn't they airlift water, food, diapers, medicine in to those in desperate need IMMEDIATELY. if they could ground every single aircraft during 9/ll within hours why couldn't they mobilize every single aircraft to get supplies in to those desperate people within hours. as i see it there is just no excuse.
if you watch the faces of the reporters covering this, they are also outraged. they just do not get it. i am particularly interested in the reaction of anderson cooper, raised with a silver spoon in his mouth, son of gloria vanderbilt, -- and he is obviously outraged. i know his life and perspective are changed forever. this is good. we need the bluebloods to speak out.
i hope we all will give as much as we can to aid this situation.

lyin -- so good to hear from you. glad you are ok.
thanks for all those willing to help.
read an article in my local paper this a.m. written by one of the heads of FEMA, that said most of FEMA's resources had been directed to anti-terrorism after 9/11, and that efforts toward natural disasters had been curtailed or discontinued. saw a news program tonite in which a FEMA official said that they were directed to study what would be the impact of the worst hypothtical natural disaster that could hit the u.s. ironically they studied the hypothetical impact of a category 5 hurricane on the city of new orleans at least two years ago. incredible. they were not prepared for this.
to those critical of the u.s. and its policy, please know that 49% of us also were/are critical of it. unfortunately we lost the election.
and my heart is broken for those affected by this tragedy.

oh man. this thread brings up such old stuff for me.
this was the issue that got my father crazed in the 60's when the wt came out with a series of articles changing their viewpoint. he was a very logical thinker and tried to get some straight answers. when they could not possibly be given because the "new light" was riddled with inconsistencies, they just threatened to disfellowship him. thus the pathway away from jws was paved for my family.

yes i read it....and as i did my mind was blown. i was completely taken in by it.
then reality set in and i realized that the author took much artistic license for the sake of a good read....and again i realized that i must prove, confirm, question everything and everyone with an agenda, even if the agenda is only to make $$$, or maybe especially if the agenda is to make $$$.
