I've read your story, Jim, and I remember reading your posts about JCs back when I was still in the borg. You are a remarkable person.
Congratulations, and good luck!
last year on july 15th, 2002, my cardiologist gave me less than a year to live.
with the 14 remaining blocked arteries, there was not much hope.
even a by-pass would only correct 3 or 4 arteries and give me a slight lease on life.

i have been *accused* of being a feminist.
i use caps, because this term has been used in a derogatory manner when used in reference to things i have posted.
the online merriam webster dictionary defines feminism as: .
With all due respect, I believe that the dictionry definition above is outdated.
At least here in the US, we have reached a point, socially, where equality between the sexes is the accepted norm. That does not mean that it is always achieved... women still carry the bulk of the burden of child-rearing and housework, and are--on average--paid less than men, even when other factors are controlled for.
But the general social consensus of the U.S. is current in favor equality between the sexes. So to call someone a feminist implies a level of activism beyond merely favoring political, social, and economic equality.
Whether that is a good thing or not, I wouldn't dare pronounce an opinion on.
here's a question for you all... why does the society insist that all concession stands be closed at their convention facilities?.
i can understand that back when they provided their own food service, they would not want the competition.
(and in all fairness, their service was undoubtedly cheaper for the friends, many of whom have limited funds.
Big Tex wrote: Realize this is the same group of people that covered up mirrors at conventions because they didn't want us wasting time combing hair.
You're kidding! When/where was that?
are all jw who were born before 1930 considered anointed or just some?
did charles taze russell at one point not say he was the only one going to heaven?
i've looked through the proclaimers book but can't seem to find the explantation as to why the special class believe they're special.
Ariell... I'm sure there are others here who can give you a better explanation, but I'll try to give a quick summary.
Russell believed that only 144,000 anointed ones constituted God's church, and that the 'harvest' for gathering such anointed ones ran from 1874 to 1914. When 1914 came and these ones weren't taken to heaven, he thought that perhaps the harvet had been slightly prolonged; but that's apparently the reason why, starting in the 20's, various individuals who joined the group felt that they weren't anointed.
These individuals, however, weren't expected to 'consecrate' themselves, get baptized, or do all the things that anointed ones did. So by the 30's, Rutherford realized that he had a problem. This growing group of people wasn't doing anything for the organization. So between 1932 and 1935, he added various responsibilities to the Jonadabs, until finally in '35 he gave the talk in which he identified them as the "great multitude", and said that they should get baptized.
So to answer your question, are all dubs born before 1930 supposedly anointed... absolutely not. The majority of those baptized before '35 probably are; but there were some individuals who were baptized before '35, but stopped partaking of the emblems that year.
sunday's talk on avoiding satan's snares brought out an interesting point that the human government's very soon will be turning all their military and political might on god's people here on earth, because of the fact jehovah's witnesses would be perceived as such a dangerous threat to the governments of the world because of their christian neutrality.
which begs the question.....when the hell were the witnesses ever a dangerous threat to anything besides logic?
they really are so freaking full of themselves.
I'm not saying that the JWs loomed large in Hitler's consciousness; I'm sure he had much more important things to worry about.
The Witnesses did, however, stick out like a sore thumb, because they refused to salute Hitler or join the Nazi organizations. Any others who did so were obviously equally hated by Hitler.
So my point is, if the WT were to be correct about a worldwide totalitarian government arising under apocalyptic conditions, then the Witnesses would undoubtedly be a focus of hatred and persecution. Certainly not the only focus, by any means! But however 'pathetic' or 'retarded' we may consider them to be, they would still be considered a threat by a totalitarian government if they refused to submit to it.

Simplesally... that's a definite possibility. But I'd think that if the WTS can negotiate to have the concessions closed, it would certainly be easier to negotiate to have their members allowed to bring food.
freein89... it's a tax issue, just like donations for the literature. Sometime in the early 90's, the convention food was put on a donation basis. That only lasted about a year or two... obviosuly, the Society was not getting enough donations to make it worthwhile. So they just ended food service at assemblies, and declared that everyone should bring their own food. They also decreed that you have to bring it with you in the morning... you're not supposed to go out at lunch to get it. But that rule is commonly disobeyed, of course.
Matty... that's interesting. I don't think the stands are left open at any conventions in the US; but I'd be interested to find out if I'm wrong.
i hardly feel as if i've been here long enough to merit this announcement, but just in case.... i'm going to be moving 1400 miles in less than 2 weeks.
between getting ready to move, finishing up stuff at my workplace, moving, and starting grad school, i have no idea how much i'll be around.. .
so, just in case i disappear and someone wonders where...that's where =).
Hope everything goes well for you, asleif! What are you going to be studying?
i just got back from my convention yesterday evening.
i'll be trying to catch up on the posts as time allows, but there is a very large volume; so if i miss any personal replies, please forgive me.. this was my first convention since i became mentally free, and it was just painful to sit through.
i used to be one of those dubs who actually enjoyed conventions.
Was there anything about disfellowshipped ones, and the active JW relationship with them.
Not that I caught; however, there was a very strong emphasis on "avoiding" and "rejecting" anyone who says anything critical about the WTS.

Thanks, integ. I certainly do agree with you on that score.
as most of you probably already know, from time to time the watchtower society likes to use district conventions as a platform for adopting silly resolutions, which more than likely are forgotten by the people who gave their approval to it by the time they leave the parking lot of the convention.
this year, during the final talk of the convention (talk entitled: "keep bearing much fruit to jehovah's glory"), a ten point resolution was adopted, with all the baby seal-like clapping following its adoption.
here's the main jist of the ten points (i didn't copy it word for word):.
Well Piph and I went to the convention this weekend, and she made a good point in regard to the resolution. It was a summary of the convention program. So, after forcing everyone to sit and listen to this stuff for three days... they make them express agreement with it all before they leave. Basically, it's a control thing.
