  at one time i was one of "gods chosen people", part of a special group of people who had exclusive access to hidden truths about the earth and its people.. now of cource i realise i'm just like everyone else and all the puzzles are still there.. kind of miss that feeling sometimes..

  when j. f. rutherford was president of the wts, he spoke at bible conventions and on recordings with great authority.

  rutherford frequently denounced governments and churches as an abomination of desolation.

  rutherford would have his followers believe that he had a direct link with god and it was he who authorized him to speak with such authority on his behalf.

  Would Ray Franz be the President of the Watchtower if........

  if the governing body arrangement had never been implemented could ray franz have become the president of the watchtower after his uncle or henschel died?.

  i believe in coc ray franz said that if knorr had been president the events of 1980 would probably not have turned out as they did.

  so do you think it is possible that by now ray franz would have been the president of the watchtower if the gb arrangement had not taken place?.

  Ah, conditional history, gotta love it.

  Assuming that Fred Franz had still become President after Knorr's death... I doubt that he would have appointed his nephew as his successor. It would seem more likely that he would have appointed another member of the group generally voted with him on the GB.

  But who knows? Fred was an intelligent man, despite all his nuttiness, and he might have realized that his nephew was the only person with the brains to run this place.

  Interesting to hypothesize what would have happened in that case... maybe a Worldwide-Church-of-God type of complete turnaround?

  it was bad enough when knorr was president but since the governing body came and in effect deposed him things have gotten progressively worse.. how exactly did the governing body come about?

  they did not invent themselves, sure there was the board of directors but they did not have the kind of power the governing body has.

  The GB's authority came from the fact that it took over the President's authority, which was the creation of one man... J. F. Rutherford.

  I'm not sure when the term 'Governing Body' started to be applied to the Board of Directors, but I think it may have been in the 40's.

  Florida Plastic Surgery Ruling

  the florida supreme court has ruled that as long as they can pay for it, children as young as 12 can receive elective plastic surgery without parental consent.

  not really, considering that the florida courts have indeed ruled that 12 year olds can get an abortion without parental consent.

  The abortion consent law actually applied to anyone up to the age of 18.

  I think we can trust doctors to apply a level of reasonableness. If a 17-year-old goes to the doctor by themselves, that's a pretty normal thing, whether they're getting an abortion or just getting a checkup.

  If a 12-year-old goes to the doctor by herself, that would be pretty weird, and I would hope that the doctor would have the common sense to ask some questions.

  If there is a law requiring parental consent, it should be a general one covering all medical treatment, not specifcally singling out abortions.

  Minimus... what do you mean by 'the Society'? Before the GB went into effect, Nathan Knorr had absolute power, and he was very loathe to give that up.

  If you mean Ray Franz and the other members of the writing department who advocated the elder arrangement... well, that could be. I can't disprove it.

  I dunno... personally, I think that the elder arrangement was an improvement. Before that, there was one congregation servant who was the dictator of the congregation. If you were on his bad side, you were toast.

  Same thing with the GB. Sure, having a dictatorial GB is a terrible thing... but it was preceded by a dictatorship by one man, which I think is worse.

  If you want to find the origins of dictatorship in the Society, you have to go back to the 1920's, when Rutherford came up with the idea of 'theocracy'.
