Actually, I thought they made those parts up out of whole cloth and then persuaded the faithful that it was the other translations that were wrong. Glad to be straightened out.

Was Charles T. Russell A Mason And Believer In The Occult?
by Latin assassin from Manhattan ini've been reading in this forum that charles t. was a mason up until his death, and that he was buried as a mummy.
i also heard that the guy who wrote the new world translation was in court at one point, and was proved a fraud because he couldn't read greek, much less transalate it.
does anyone have any proof of all this?

Scientologists Seem WORSE than the JWs!
by teenyuck inthis was in the local paper today, in the gossip section of all things: research into the church of scientology has revealed that some of hollywoods most powerful stars may have signed documents giving up their right to psychiatric care (a major concession in hollywood) and to see relatives.
tom cruise, john travolta, kirstie alley, juliette lewis and lisa marie presley are among the celebrities who could have signed contracts banning the privileges as they moved up the churchs hierarchy, the web site page six reports.
documents relating to the bans have been uncovered by david touretzky, a research professor at carnegie mellon university who has been studying the religion for six years.

The fact that Scientology is still going strong proves to me that the Watchtower will never die.

I can't do it anymore.
by Gadget inpeople who've been reading my posts will know i've been trying to get reinstated so i can get back together with my girlfriend/fiance.
the more time goes on, the less i feel able to do that.
all the things i hear from the platform, and the things that elders have said to me just reinforce the fact that i want nothing at all to do with this organisation anymore.

Perhaps I don't understand how this works, but if you've been working on getting reinstated, doesn't that mean that you've already been disfellowshipped? If that's the case, what more can the elders do? I cannot imagine any reason why you would talk to elders or "Os" of any kind. No minds can be changed; no understandings can be reached--it can only be miserable for you. I can only imagine how difficult this must be. You're in my thoughts.

My two week consulting trip to Bethel (the beginning of the end) Part 5
by seven006 ini knew i had a bright mind, i had been told that my whole life.
she hated going out in service but since i hated it myself we didn't go do the door to door work much.
i look back now and i can't believe how controlling and un-loving that religion had made me.

(Warning, rant enclosed) I feel like my brain is turning to mush.....
by razorMind ini'm sick of my job, sick of the city i'm living in, sick of most of the people who surround me daily.
like a lot of folks here, i was "encouraged to find education within jah's service" discouraged from seeking further education whilst being raised in the troof.
were it up to my father, i probably wouldn't have been permitted to attend regular public school, grades k through 12, much less college---education was that much maligned in my family.

razorMind--I know it is a cliche, but you are going to be 37 in 4 years whether or not you go to school! It's better to focus on the process than on the outcome when the time looks daunting. Lev Vygotsky (if you're not familiar with him, look him up; you'll love him!) argued that intelligence is developed through conversation--it is respectful interaction that allows us to understand and test our ideas and appreciate our own mental processes. So look for possibilities for conversations: does your local library have a book club? Do you have a Borders or Barnes and Noble nearby? (they often have book discussion groups). Check possibilites for continuing education at your local community college and/or high school. See if there is a Great Books group you could join. Oh, and check out the possibility of a "Philosophical Cafe" in your area--they are usually at bookstores, but call local colleges' philosophy departments to see if you can get a line. I'm realizing just now that I have not one clue where you live and these suggestions are all US. But I really understand the hunger for people who share your interests and that feeling that your brain is shrinking! Best of luck! (Oh, and if that is 100% for 32 credit hours per year that is a great deal and might be worth sticking around at that job for if you can't find another employer with that kind of tuition reimbursement benefit.)

(((((gadget))))) I'm so sorry you're going through this--but good for you for having the courage to tell her the truth in the face of her distress. You know you have done the right thing, but dealing with her feelings has got to be rough. I hope you have called the emergency number; I hope you can detach somewhat. You can't do for her the work she has to do--dealing with her own feelings. Break-ups are always traumatic. And often dramatic. But she's going to be fine. And so are you.

alternate forms of "witnessing"

all student organizations were represented as well as probably 15 to 20 religious organizations.

Last year, there was a sealed manila envelope in the new student orientation package that said something like "information from Jehovah's Witnesses inside." When you opened it up, everything looked as if they were associated with the college. I hit the roof (and this was way before I knew what I know now). There's was the only information from any outside organization let alone a religious one. I fussed and fumed and fussed some more and as far as I know, they didn't have anything in the orientation materials this year. But, yeah, they seem to be on the "campus ministry" bandwagon. Religion being a trap and a snare and all.
