whenever people look at my cd collection, they'll come across blue oyster cult, black sabbath, iron maiden, led zeppelin, etc.
but then they'll come across something unusual.. right now i'm listening to "kenny rogers - ten years of gold".
my parents had this album, and i loved it.
Well, let's see...what I grew up with (as in my mom and dad's records)
The Smothers Brothers
Flatt & Scruggs
Johnny Cash
Neil Diamond
And an amazing collection of Broadway musical albums. Those are what I listened to most.
My personal collection, as a kid, was The Partridge Family, then...John Denver, Barry Manilow, Kenny Rogers, The Bee Gees, Queen...
below is a review left on barnes & noble about diane wilson's book.
i, too, am one of jehovah's witnesses.
but jehovah's witnesses do no do that.
I sent in a review too.
I mentioned that active JWs are forbidden to read material from 'apostates', and so it was extremely unlikely that any current JWs who had blasted the book had even read it (which means they weren't really reviewing the book).
edited to correct typo
i'm so nervous!.
i just started grad school this year, and had a teaching assistantship this last fall.
it paid a few thousand dollars for 20 hours work per week, but the important thing was that it came with a waiver of out-of-state tuition and part of in-state tuition.

I just started grad school this year, and had a teaching assistantship this last fall. It paid a few thousand dollars for 20 hours work per week, but the important thing was that it came with a waiver of out-of-state tuition and part of in-state tuition. Full-time graduate tuition (9 credit hours) is $4590 a semester for out-of-state, $1854 in-state.
Without a teaching assistantship (TA) or research assistantship (RA), I have to borrow student loans for tuition and to live on. This is not good. Going part-time and working is just not possible - I'm looking at 8 years of grad school if I go full time...I'll be in my late 40's when I get my PhD.
The department told me they didn't have a TA or an RA for me for the spring. But tonight I got an email from a post-doc in a related department, who is looking for an RA in environmental anth - exactly my field! He asked me to send him my CV. I did, but I'm so afraid they'll pick someone else! Keep your fingers and toes crossed for me, guys?? Not only would it be financial salvation, it would be a great learning opportunity on how to do env anth research "on the ground."
I'm biting my fingernails!
does anyone know of this article?
my friend just told me her mom came home the other day and told her you are not supposed say the word pagan.
but she did not tell her why but instead gave her the wt article to read.
My guess is it's because they're offending so many people by calling their beloved holidays "pagan". I think it's become a P.R. issue for them in some areas.
I remember a young male pioneer and his friends driving down mainstreet at night, yelling "Pagan Crap" at all the Christmas decorations.
Lovely attitude, that.
Then again, they could be setting it up so that, 5 or 10 years down the road, they can "new light" Christmas...if they start now, in 5 years the rank and file could be ready to smoothly accept an 'about face' on that...(hey, it's possible...you never thought they'd join the UN, either)
a few days ago, mom tells me she's visiting a new kh.
according to her account, all the pioneer sisters are asking about "me" (we don't remember the name, but your daughter that used to come to meetings.
) ps #1 says "we're missing you, tell her we say hi.
PS #2 says "Well, doesn't she know the end is near, what is her contact information so I can talk to her about "the end."
Somebody's hurting for a Bible study, and thinks that a family member of an active JW will be an easy mark.
Get caller ID if you don't already have it, and don't answer the door.
the sacto kings have overtaken the sucko lakers for #1 in the country!!!!

I still haven't recovered from the Fiesta Bowl...

You have been found guilty of propogating mindless crap. You are hereby sentenced to take no less than 2 classes in physical anthropology taught by those with an understanding of the genetics involved, from approved institutions. (here's a clue...it's not secular history that deals with such things )
Edited because I forgot...
Bottle necking of the gene pool has happened a couple times in human evolution. This is typical of slow breeding species. To interpret this phenomenon that genetisists say happened the last time hundreds of thousands of years ago as proof of the Flood it patent intellectual dishonesty.
I thought they considered the plague die-off in Europe in the 14th c a bottleneck?
of course, there are so many to choose from.
one of my favorite examples of pure goulish evil is found in psalm 137:8,9:.

I will admit to being irritated by some Christians and their insistance that the Bible has no flaws.
Those Christians are not, normally, found on this board. They are, instead, found trying to twist the laws and government of this country into being even more biased towards particularly fundamentalist Christianity than it already is. I am most disgusted at those "Christians" who use the Bible and "patriotism" to intimidate those who question them into silence.
Occasionally, my irritation with these "Christians" needs a reasonably safe outlet...which leads me to places like this board, where I can usually find at least a couple of like-minded people with which to share a virtual brew and shake our heads at stupidity.
It's certainly not meant as an attack on members of this board who are Christians...
i got into a rather heated discussion this morning with my unbaptised but raised jehovah's witness wife.
we discussed so many things: feb 1 watchtower article on 607 and 1914, the un, beth sarim, blood, god's mouthpiece here on earth, etc.
this was yet another attempt on my part to try to plant a seed of doubt.
I'm afraid I'm not nearly as good as some (Blondie) here at coming up with answers off the top of my head...but I want to keep this near the top so others see it.
I think the membership in the UN issue is a pretty good one. Do the JWs still use the Revelation book? Can you get a copy? It pretty much trashes the UN, yet only a couple of years after we all studied it twice, they joined as an NGO, and stayed one for 10 years.
Of course, the pedophilia issue is much worse, but JWs dismiss it by just refusing to believe the accusers. There's a bit more undeniable evidence in the UN issue...although, unfortunately, most JWs deny it anyway.
You can't pry people's minds open with a crowbar, unfortunately.
