i just saw on tv that a 3 bedroom detached property with swimming pool in florida costs the exact same as my 2 bedroom apartment on the coast in england.
i was totally suprised by this.
as there are quite a few american posters here, i am curious as to housing costs in other areas.
Looks like it's time for me to pack my bags and head to Sparta!

i have been reading the previous posts today and have noticed some pretty heated depates on politcs with, rightfully so, locked threads.. all of us on this board come from many different countries with different forms of goverments and benifits.
everybody thinks that they have the best and are willing to defend that view.
i would hate to see any of us lose "friendships" on this forum over debates that have no winners.. i enjoy posts from everybody that is involved in these discussions and would hate to loose the insights they provide on every other issue besides politics.

allgrowedup, my pleasure!
I'm going throught the DT's right now, man! Could we put off the next work-out for a bit?!!
Simon,
Perhaps what might help is if we had a clear definition of what you consider to be "political drivel." I know others have alluded to the fact that this is a relative term, and I would have to say that I agree. I can say with all honesty that I've tried very, very hard to post in a respectable manner in political threads - and have even gone so far as to make sure whoever I am debating with knows that I mean no disrespect. However, I have a feeling gnawing at me that says that perhaps what I said in the most respectful words I could come up with were considered "political drivel", when I know in my heart and mind that they were not intended to be such.
Simon, this is your board - you set the rules. As I said in another thread, the Terms of Use do not guarantee us a democracy here, and if we don't like it, we can go somewhere else. You do this because you want to, not because you owe it to us. I believe that those who are on this board really love it here - we don't want to go anywhere else, or we would already have left! But I think we need to know that if political threads are still going to be allowed here, we need you to define what is acceptable and what isn't - in black and white terms so things don't come to this again. For example, something along the lines of "no neo-con statements" doesn't explain the rules because what can be deemed a "neo-con statement" by one, wouldn't necessarily be by others - and this could potentially jeopardize the status of posters who truly mean no harm. I believed at one time that simply stating the rule of "being respectful of one another" would suffice - but I've gone all out to be respectful, and have still been misinterpreted. Therefore, in my humble and respectful opinion, I think it does boil down to political beliefs. And if you want to say that there will be no conservative or right-wing political views expressed on this board, then you have every right to say so - because it is your board. You are not running for President - it doesn't matter if your decisions are politically popular. But it matters to me - and I believe others with conservative viewpoints - that if we are not allowed to express our political viewpoints, that we are at least made aware of the rule so we are sure to keep from unknowingly jeopardizing our status on this board.

when i was young, i used to have role models.
my dad, probably up to when i was about 9 or 10. from about age 11 to about 16, it was the dub family that studied w us at that time.
they reintegrated us into the borg, after we had drifted away.
Interesting question, SS.
I agree that we need them in our formative years. I believe that if there were more positive role models taking an active role in the life of young children, we would not have poverty or crime perpetuating itself. However, as we get older, I think it is good for us to be more discerning - recognizing what feels right in others and applying it to ourselves. I've often reflected on that - in the sense of the number of people that have come through my life, and how if I take time to think about them one at a time, how I can say what each has done to help form a part of me, even if it is something silly. When I take a step back and look at them all, I realize that we are all potential role models - sometimes positive and sometimes negative - in varying degrees to different people with whom we come in contact with. With that in mind, I guess that says that perhaps this is one of the best reasons to be the best we can be at all times - we never know who will walk away from us and apply something they've learned - positive or negative.
I think I need another beer.

they will try to find signs of life on mars.
The Watchtower ain't all that would be shaken up if they found evidence of life there! This will be very interesting to watch in the next days and weeks to come...

Many people think that allegiance to/love for the president is somehow patriotic and synonymous with love of country. They are of course wrong, in that if the president is hurting the country, then allegiance to/love for him is anything but patriotic. For whatever reason, these people had no trouble understanding this when Clinton was president.
Sorry, Dude! I'm not going there with you! However, I'm going to give you an "A" for effort. My resolve needs a little exercising now and then - thanks for the workout!

Real estate just keeps going up and up and up in my area! When we bought our home in the 4th quarter of 1999, people were waiting in line for a week or more - literally camping outside of a new subdivision office - just to buy a home. In fact, there is a court case pending (it may have been heard by now, I'm not sure) where one person who waited in line for a week was suing another who got the home they wanted. I don't know all the details, but this just goes to show how fierce the competition has been. Also, at the same time, resale homes generally sold within a week, and many of them were the subject of bidding wars where the owner walked away with much more than their asking price. It slowed a bit around 9/11, but has picked up again, although not to the levels we saw from '99 to '01. Yet the prices continue to rise. Here's a comparison: When we bought a new, 1600 square-foot single story home with a full basement home in the Kansas City, MO area in 1995 we paid $130k for it. When we sold it in 1999, we got $150k for it. By the time we paid the realtor, etc, we hardly made anything over four years. However, we have lived in the home we are in now - in the Sacramento area - also for four years. So, in 1999, we paid $215k for our 2000 sq. ft. home, in which the only improvements we've made so far is to put in a pool and some landscaping. A month ago, one with the exact same floor plan a block away, with a smaller lot than ours and without a pool (pools increase home values here), sold for $410k. So in four years, we've doubled our investment here, where in Missouri, we barely broke even in four years. So, yes, home values vary by state - but also by country, by city, and by zip code. When you factor in highly desirable items such as views or location, it can vary even more wildly. For example, my parents bought the three-bedroom version of my home in the next city, and it is on a puny lot that is so steep, the builder was forced by the city to put up a retaining wall - but they have a beautiful view of the city lights - and they willingly paid a $40k premium on top of the cost of the home. There are homes not far from them with $100k and higher premiums for city lights views. So, there are many factors which determine the price of a home, and how much someone will pay. Bottom line: first-time home buyers are going to have to be willing to commute long distances or live in less populated areas in order to buy if they want to live here - or - they may need to move to a completely different region of the country. I say this because I know if I were buying a home for the first time right now - I couldn't afford the one I'm in.

I agree with Wednesday 100 percent!
i happen to support Bush, but I do listen to other views. But i feel it is wrong to call one side propaganda , just b/c it is not your political view.
Just to make sure this gets read, I copied this from another thread. I think it is important to wipe the slate clean, and I want to do just that --
growedupMe, four! I love my President and I love my country, even if others may view him/us as self-serving imperialists! However, after the last very heated thread, I came to realize that no one is going to change my mind - much anyway - and I'm not going to change anyone else's mind. Since I've got enough aggravation in my life without voluntarily subscribing to more, it's time for me to stay out of these threads! (Anyone know of a good 12-step program to help with that?!) I don't want to tick anyone off, but I can see that the fastest way to do just that is to get in my two cents worth. Sure, I don't upset the conservatives (much), but I do the liberals (without fail!). Yet, I happen to actually LIKE everyone here, so why do something that makes some angry?
So, Yeru, I hope you don't mind if I chime in here, but I would also like to apologize for participating in political polarization (there's a tongue twister) on this board! I came here to make friends, not enemies. I hope I can be forgiven as well.
(that's supposed to be an olive branch!)
