hello!
by gamergirl inglad to be a new member and find others with similarities of background.
some background info on me: my dad became jw when i was young, so i spent maybe a third of my life in the religion.
although i respect everyone's beliefs, i personally knew many genuinely selfless people in my congregation, but the way i was raised, now that i am an adult i am realizing was very sheltered and unrealistic.

A letter from my brother Nathan to my uncle in 1978 when Nathan was at Bethel
by Magwitch inmy uncle recently died and apparently he never threw anything away.
among many things he held onto was a letter that my brother wrote to my uncle in 1978 from bethel.
my brother was in the same hall as howard zenke (a real heavy at bethel) and nathan rode to all the meetings with howard and beana.

Seems to me back in the late 1980s early 1990s they were trying to tell people the generation of 1914 would include any who were of an age of understanding in 1914 and concluded perhaps if you were 10 years of age you could understand the bible teachings. Even if you agreed with that thinking those people would be 110 years old this year. I don't know any 110 year olds.
I don't have any reference material on this as I have purged my library of it, but maybe someone can dig some up.

You are right, it is horrible. I only made it to 2:57 and turned it off, it gave me shivers reminding me of sitting at the hall listening to the BS.

Witnesses: Why The 1/19/14 WT Lesson Is Dangerous
by Apognophos intoday's watchtower lesson touched on the history of hezekiah's reign, and then made a surprising modern-day application.
having used my time before the meeting to research the underlying material instead of highlighting my magazine, i personally found this to be an upsetting study, and decided to put this warning here in the hopes that some active witnesses read it.. the most important thing i want to say to you is that the actual flow of events in this bible account were severely misrepresented, and that there are some disturbing implications in the distortions that were made.
1. hezekiah's father ahaz makes himself a vassal to assyria out of fear of their overwhelming might (2 kings 16:7, 8).. 2. upon becoming king, hezekiah rebels against assyria (2 kings 18:7).

Apognophos,
I enjoyed your post. It sickens me to think I have family members that will follow along with whatever is printed in the WT without any additional thought.

So the Jw's say it is ok to perform civilian service in lieu of military service. Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't civilian service also be a form of promoting military and governmental agendas? Hmmm...
I was not aware of this change as I was on the way out when it took place. I think of all the men that served time in prison prior to the time this option became available to them I have to think there are alot of ticked off folks out there. Then there are the ones that died for the cause for no good reason.
Just one more thing that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

New here, just wanted to say "Hello"
by Goldiver inhello all, it is nice to have a forum for former jw's and see i wasn't the only one out there having serious doubts.
my parents got into it when i was about 4 years old.
my family was part of the granville ny congregation.. my dad in time became an elder.

Thank you all for the additional welcomes! I really appreciate it and feel like I am among friends and it is great to see how many folks are out there like myself, even though we may have different stories we were able to reach the same conclusion. The subjects discussed here are difficult to understand at times unless you have been there and done it so to speak. That being so, it is hard to discuss feelings with those unfamiliar with the JW ways, and it is nice to be able to exchange thoughts with ones that really understand.

Are you materialistic?
by Goldiver inwhy, yes i am according to the jws.
this is an topic that has always irked me with the jws.
anyone who had a good paying job and nice things was materialistic.

Apognophos,
You have posed a good argument and I understand your point. I just don't agree with JWs treating someone differently because they aren't at a certain level of poverty.

I want to grow my hair back out!
by onlyastory ina few months prior to baptism i had shoulder length hair which i loved and had wanted ever since i was a child.
i remember sitting with an elder during a bible study and asking him point blank if i 'had' to cut my hair.
whilst the answer was given slightly awkwardly the answer was a no, "there are no rules that say you have to cut your hair".

Consequences of the cult? FEAR and PASSIVITY - anything else?
by BluePill2 independing how long you where a member or if you where a born in, the watchtower leaves certain marks or traces in your mind that you only notice after leaving them for good.. i think this is similar to a big river, with a high level of water that covers the hidden rocks and cliffs.
once you start lowering the water level, all these rocks come to the surface and suddenly that river is difficult to navigate.. like that river, our minds are flooded with false hope for the future, a naive expectation to have jehovah sort things out for you and lots of fake, conditional love and warmth.
all these things hide the fact that the same organization also put some heavy rocks into your mind called fear and passivity.

I know exactly how you feel, it is all part of thier thought control process and it works. Like another said, you are recognizing these feelings and where they stem from. You are in the healing process and it takes time, it may take alot of time but by seeing it for what it is you are making positive steps forward. All who have left deal with this to some extent and I am confident you can overcome it.

Anyone Can be baptised - Can't they?
by tim hooper indoes a new convert have to be approved for baptism by the elders or someone similar i wonder?.
years ago, at a circuit assembly, i came across a young man whose jw father had thrown him out of the family home because of his abusiveness.
he'd got nowhere to go so he travelled south and finished up attending our local assembly.

Back in 1982 when I was baptized there was a lengthy one on one session with an elder and alot of scripted questions which I had to answer correctly so they could be sure I was in line with thier thinking. If I could only go back in time.....
