I haven't seen it yet, but the review in today's daily mail made me smile:

'Historians may also be surprised by the fact that the Persian army employed giants, deformed ninjas and mutants with razor-sharp lobster claws. No wonder George Bush is frightened of Iran. They've got Mutants of Mass Destruction.

Despite the film's lip-service to liberty, it is effectively an incitement to gang violence in defence of your own turf.

Ethically there's nothing to choose between Spartans and Persians, except that the Spartans claim to be heterosexual and have clearly discovered dental floss.

Not even the movie's basic premise that Leonidas led 300 men to a heroic death is true. According to the historian Herodotus, he had about 7,000 men, many from areas of Greece other than Sparta.'

I felt like it was a pro-Bush, pro-war propaganda piece. I left the theater irritated.

Ok. I'm calling BS on this. If you want to look at this as the Spartans are like Witnesses, they sacrifice so much to fight the masses of evil, but ultimately are triumphant because Jehovah is on their side... that works too.

Pretty much, the Spartans gave up a lot of luxuries to kick ass. So find any other group that fights hard, and its a fitting parallel for them too. Don't make everything about the war.

Crumpet, I will say that this movie is VERY moving. I went and saw it with some friends, and as we walked out of the theatre, we all agreed that our hearts were all pumping, and we were all ready to get in a fight with someone. I just find that interesting.

Also, you might enjoy the gratuitous boob scenes.

If my enlightened detractors will note, I was not being dogmatic about the intent of the film. I personally perceived what appeared to be not one, but several implanted phrases eerily mirroring the 21st- century call to battle in Iraq and Afghanistan. Example: the pleadings of Leonidas' wife to send reinforcements to the front. Where have we heard that kind of emotional appeal lately? The following is not opinion: The war in Iraq was/is a travesty and future generations will consider the Bush administration guilty of war crimes.

As for calling bullshit, I do so regarding any statement that pretends this movie even comes close to an accurate representation of the original epic.

I appreciate these sentiments . I reacted much in the same way to Braveheart back in the day. That means the movie accomplished it's intended goal, to entertain, and provoke thought and feeling. I'm glad you enjoyed it and apologize if my comments irritated you. Believe me richierich, you're the last guy I want to piss off.

I'm sure my personal issues with this film have much to do with the timing of it's release. It seems like more than a coincidence that such a stirring "freedom isn't free" fest should be presented to the public at a time when support for the misguided invasion of Iraq is at it's lowest, with tens of thousands of young men and women stranded in a losing battle.

    Love and respect to all,

Also--and I'm trying to find exactly where--but Queen Gorgo said "Freedom isn't free."

War propaganda veiled in sepia-toned gore, but entertaining nonetheless.

Thanks MsMcD! This was the only scene apart from the closing credits and the cartoon wolf that I thought was particularly reminiscent of Frank Miller's other films.

Sooooo I can kind of agree where the people were coming from about the "war propaganda" suggestion. That closing speech "Free the world from mysticism and tyranny" - Hmmm!

There were so many things that reminded me of other films - the Charlton Heston scene dividing the red sea from Cecil De Be Mille Ten Commandments, the music and sepia glow in the harvest fields - straight from Gladiator, fights scenes - Kill Bill and Crouching Tiger, the Troy scene with the boats, the heavily religious emblematic scenes throughout - kind of thing old Mel G woulda been proud of and reminded me of the Passion of the Christ throughout, the Braveheart pep talk.... the trouble is whilst this movie was undoubtedly entertaining it was like a trace of many other movies, which it didn't so much reference as just remind me that they were better.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy it. I loved our fearless Spartan queen - a really good strong role for the most part. I found the "love scenes" a bit embarrassing but that might just because I was watching with ex Mr C.

What I can say unequivocally is that this film did move me. It moved be like no other movie has before it and I say:

GIVE THAT COSTUME DESIGNER AND OSCAR

There were parts of the film where detached limbs were flying around and I realised I wasnt even noticing them - thats how distracted I was by Leoniades thighs - I wanted to crawl down the aisle and get up and lick the screen. Ladies - I don't think there have been any previous movies where the men's outfits were so skimpy and their bodies so tantalizing that it had that effect. So don't be put off if you are squeamish and don't like violence - mostly you won't even notice it because the eye candy is just non stop!!! I was panting at the end and had to loosen my shirt for air. (ex) Mr C was in no doubt either about what I had enjoyed in that particular movie! Although since Leoniades is Scottish like him he didn't get jealous.

I can see this film also getting a very big gay following!
