Witchcraft - Would you use it?

    Lots of answers! Cool.

I don't know where to start.

Many of you say that you wouldn't use it because you don't know enough about it. I'd agree with that. Just as background, in 2002 I joined a training coven and attended classes and sabbats for a year. Then I was initiated and allowed to join a coven which had been established since the 70's. I stayed with that coven for a further two years before leaving it to be solitary.

Even despite the training, I'd always be VERY careful when doing any sort of manipulation of energy.

As for Karma, I do believe in "cause and effect" but not necessarily the law of three (some witches think that what you do comes back to you three times). Therefore I always analyse my intentions and only work magick for healing, gains of needs (not greed), and protections (or rarely, banishing what isn't needed or wanted).

My personal results....well let me think which I'm willing to reveal and I'll let you know. By the way, I haven 't performed any "spells" for months and that is the norm for me. I am more pagan than I am witch.

    Daystar: I'm no Glinda.

I'll post a little more later on.

Fun thread Sirona! I have to say I was very skeptical but Hemp Lover and I went to a voo doo love potion shop and met this very attractive Indian looking guy who was a model and he explained how he used the various products in his shop to clothe him with protection or to summon spirits etc. Rather carried away and desirous of impressing him we bought some enormous candles and some soaps.

The soap that I used was "Come to me" soap and it worked - LOL! In fact everybody at the after wedding party at Hemp Lovers who used the bathroom used that soap - so thats the explanation y'all if you found yourself oddly enslaved by the person next to you!

More seriously I dont know that I could take the leap of faith into Wicca quite so far, however like you I do take meaning from natural occurences and do believe the phases of the moon directly affect my moods. I think this relates more to my enrapturement with Thomas Hardy who filled his stories with omens from nature as a youngster and my leaning toward the romantic and dramatic.

And I also think sometimes things happen just at the right time for us to make perfect use of the opportunity and that life will keep throwing you the same lesson until you learn it - however many varied ways it needs to be thrown for you to make sense. I dont necessarily believe in a force or structure organising this. Like the Indian boy said - its the meaning you invest that makes everything work. If you believe in something like a soap will make someone attracted to you, well you will probably behave in a manner more likely to attract them and the soap itself is just part of that ritual.

Rituals are cool and can bring a sense of peace and is another form of meditation which brings focus and the more focussed we are on our goals the more likely we are to achieve them.

    Look forward to reading more.

Do you think witchcraft is just a set of delusions based on ancient superstition?

Mostly (although a lot of it is not so "ancient"). But it's no sillier than most other religions, and it does have some plus points. The Wiccan Rede is a much more reasonable basis for morality than, for example, the endless petty rules of the Abrahamic religions. And a certain reverence for nature can be a good thing. But I simply see no evidence that the universe can be altered as you claim by mere incantations.

Having said that, you're not hurting anybody so, you know, do as thou wilt.

The closest I want to come into contact with witchcraft is watching the Harry Potter movies or re-runs of Bewitched.

With that said, you know what they do to witches don't you?

ROFL! Is that why everyone gets randy at apostofests?

I think that there is a certain aspect of "magick" which works by having a direct influence on your psyche, however I don't think thats the only explanation.

    Derek,

You have such a way with words

"Incantation" makes it sound as though there is lots of mindless chanting, which isn't the case.

I suppose you'll only believe me if I turn you into a frog at the next apostofest. I've done it successfully with others... didn't you notice? LOL.

    ROFLMAO Mary,

    That scene is so funny.

Now why did you have to remind everyone of the stuff they do to witches?

There is a very large constituency of magicians who consider magick to be at least mostly, if not completely, psychological. The entities, etc. are nothing more (or less!) than archetypes of the unconcious (a la C.G. Jung) and there is nothing more "supernatural" about it than that.

C.G. Jung - Psychology and the Occult, for some interesting case studies along these lines (though not directly, more dealing with somnambulistic states, "channeling", etc.)

Also by Jung, Man and His Symbols.

I'm Neo-Pagan, and I've done spellwork on occasion. IMO, it's no sillier than any other faith out there. I've told my Catholic mom that she'd feel quite comfortable at one of our rituals- what with all the candles, incense, and chanting, it's not too different from Catholic Mass. I don't think of it as Satanic, as I don't believe Satan exists.

    Thanks Daystar,

I have read Jung etc. and I too believe that when getting "inspiration" for instance, we are simply tapping into the unconscious (collective unconscious even).

However, I also believe that certain energy and entities exist and whilst from a philosophical standpoint I could say we are all "one" I'd also say that there are influences outside of our own soul's ability or psychology.

    Just my opinion,

    Sirona
