Once upon a time I would have said yes men and women can just be mates but now I know that if there is any hint of sexual attraction things can get awkward (I'm *not* gonna say "messy")
I've had female friends in the past and where there has been a sexual attraction on my part I've gotten over it and tried to be just mates. But I have messed up in the past, really messed up and the worst thing about it is losing a friend.
but then again, too many men still see us as mere sex objects.......
It's not about this Soledad. Men can and do appreciate women for their minds and accomplishments. I just am saying that it is naive to think that a man and a woman could be close friends without the potential for romantic feelings to arise. I am not saying that such a relationship is impossible. It's just human nature for things to get complicated, IMHO.

OK I'm going to duck out of here really fast after this.
I have many same sex friends both gay and straight that I have no sexual interest in. I've known my closest friend for over 20 years and there has never been anything remotely sexual about our relationship.
Why is it any different for heterosexuals?

I think BFD has a good point. Ultimately what we are doing is lumping everyone together, when in reality we need to just say, it depends on the people. Some people (male or female) can have a close relationship with the same/opposite sex without there being anything sexual and some cannot.
