twitch,
I recall in the late 60's that a great debate took place among rock and jazz drummers as to who were more able as drummers. It was a lunatic debate and was active in the musical press for some weeks before Ginger Baker stepped up and decided that he would prove a case.
Baker and Elvin Jones, the extraordinary jazz drummer who played with Coltrane, decided to put on a 'drum battle'. I think it was held at the Round House in London, cannot remember, though I did catch the performance. What happened was actually a very clever marketing ploy between agents who had a sell-out show on their hands and had manufactured the whole 'battle thing for effect. What took place was never going to be a 'battle' but a very carefully orchestrated venue between to brilliant drummers, who played together and solo to a packed and ethusiastic house.
I have to admit that though I had seen Baker live a number of times, I was very impressed with his creative range, which strayed way outside of rock and his energy was indisuptable, though I have to say that Elvin Jones imho was even more compelling and far better on the brass - at least at that time.

If a piece of music moves me, if it makes me feel goosebumps, or resonates with with my life experience, musically and/or lyrically- that's good music.
If no one else gets it or appreciates it, it matters not to me.
I love music, both recorded and live.
Is it possible to demystify art to such a degree that it loses it's beauty?
For a thrilling replay of live music by Cream including Ginger Baker....Purchase London May 2/ 3-6 2005.....Cream Royal Albert Hall.
Available at Costco (of all places for about $20.00.) We purchased a sound system out of Canada that rocks. It's by Axiom....nothing in the states comes close.
We played this cream CD and never stopped. .......enjoy if you decide to purchase.
Real music, real drumming, .....ABSOLUTELY REAL!

Would've loved to have seen that show. Though I only know of him through Cream, his playing in the scope of what I know stands out. His sense of pattern and fill, the "fluidity" of his playing and the timbre of the tuned kit always makes me think he's one of those guys who isn't just "playing" drums, per se. He's part of the instrument and what's going on in the moment.
Watching the CD right now I recommended about Cream.....and the chills are running up and down the spine. Hope you all look at this!!!! No need for electronic BS adjustments here.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll check that one out. Heard it was pretty good.

Exactly, nvrgnbk! I couldn't agree more.
