Fear of athiests

I seemed to have missed some of the excitement from last night. But I wanted to post my observations.

It seems to me that some have an irrational fear of athiests. It's as if they fear we are evil people that are out to destroy their faith.

Accusationes were made last night that atheists here are a clique that persecutes others. Some have said that our postings make the religiously inclined shy away form posting.

How can you say such things when we have such a diverse group? How can you say such things when the extremely religious post fervently here?

Are you perhaps confused by the fact that many athiests on this board are kind and compasionate and among the first to reach out to others? Does this contrast so sharply with your preconceived notion that athiests are evil that it blows your mind?

Does it also blow your mind that many of the athiests posts are logical and make a lot of sense?

Why not see us as different, unique or off beat, and be happy that we finally have the freedom to express ourselves.

Why do you have to attack?

**** You are misinformed dear. Or perhaps you think far too much of your own beliefs.

    Hi Changeling

I was brought up atheist( one of few things mum and dad agreed upon) became JW, now basically atheist, though i would like to be proved wrong. I think we are a very diverse bunch here. I like to hear brotheraposte's view, and then those who are gay, voideater etcetera.

I missed last night I was here but for some reason missed it.

I like u like to express myself here, we are I think a broad Church with a common ancestry

I don't think it's the fear of atheism that motivates that kind of sentiment so much as the fear of losing one's cherished religious beliefs. It is psychologically troubling to admit that our religious beliefs and hopes for the afterlife might be wrong. I know. It led to a deep depression in me personally. It's much easier on the psyche to vilify atheists and the religiously apathetic than it is to entertain the thought that your religious belief system might be flawed. There are certainly those out there who seem to be as fervent about pushing atheism as evangelicals are about pushing their beliefs, but those folks are in the minority. In fact, "preachy" atheist threads are often provoked by believers who make insulting or downright absurd comments.

My philosophy is to live and let live. If you believe in Jehovah, Jesus, Allah, Krishna, or whomever, that's fine. Good for you. I won't criticize anyone for it as long as they respect me and everyone else who doesn't share their beliefs. But if you try to push your beliefs on me, I'm not going to take great pains to frame my response in a way that won't be offensive to you. To JWD's credit, I've never had anyone try to push their beliefs on me. I think last night's topic was much ado about nothing. Some people aren't prepared to read comments that challenge their preconceived notions about religion and react negatively when nonbelievers express their views. That’s all.

Hi Vinny, Changeling was agreeing with u, she is very tolerant and just wants u (third person) to understand that we as atheists can be happy, agreeable and searching. These are not mutually exclusive

Bingo! In fact if you are tactful with your title you can get away with those comments most of the time.

This is why there is a bit of a call going out, by many, to show a little more respect for divergent viewpoints.

Vinny I have been disrespected despite my change from hard on atheist to gnostic by a certain christian no less. You guys have got to learn some respect for facts and books outside of the bible too.
