Perceptive words.
There is a side of this site that is just too Dubby for my liking, and I know many people feel the same way.
And yet the research, the analysis and the scans from those who are still in, or still interested, are extremely important.
But to keep other people, normal non-scholarly ex Dubs or exiting Dubs, actively participating here, there has to be some less high-brow conversation going on. Call it fluffy if you like. And the soapies just make it all the more compelling.
I think that if everyone just posted scriptural research, JW Discussion would have turned into JW Boring a long time ago.
While our flight form the borg has hurt us all, I think it boils down to this: some people are nice, some people are jerks. Lately, the jerks have had the upper hand. It's time to turn the tables.

And Amen to that, Changeling!

Jerks can hurt a forum so why are they tolerated here?
Changeling,
I have been on this Board since its "Wild West' days, when I am sure the more sensitive among us would have run screaming and sobbing from view. The debates on those days were quite abrasive and this demanded that a person think before they post, something that would definately improve the tone of the Board.

I have also seen many people called names such as "jerk" by people who claim to decry the use of such words. My experience is that when a person makes a statement that is vigorously disagreed with, and they are then unable to defend their statement, the person attacking their viewpoints then becomes a "jerk" in their eyes.
This is how we were trained to react as we went "door to door". This is also a way never to really understand anything outside our own paradigm.

Hillary_Step has made an excellent point. I, for one, am getting weary of the overly sensitive, needy posters here who are constantly whining about the "rude" people who are, apparently, anyone who disagrees with them in plain (not abusive) language. Even a gentle teasing causes an over-reaction that generates an entire thread by them wanting to be reassured that they are still "loved". I suggest that these folks work on their own insecurities rather than exposing their thin skin on a discussion board. Hemophiliacs shouldn't run naked through the cactus patch.
Gregor,
Hemophiliacs shouldn't run naked through the cactus patch.
lol....Excellent analogy.
As I have noted beofre on numerous occasions a person who thinks they can or should change the Board, thinks that they can change human nature, presuming that it needs changing. This is an exterprise that will end up in tears.
If we do not have a thick enough skin to survive the cut and thrust of this Board, if we find that our emotions are disturbed by what happens in this one-dimensional world, if we find ourselves straying into debates that demand more from us than a superficial understanding, then perhaps we would be better off in 'read' mode until we are able to handle things a littel more rationally.

Why does JWD have to be a "cactus patch"?
Brent, Who said it was?
