Gore Vidal wrote this article and it was just too large for me to put it all in...he was writing in relation to the professor/police issue and the majority of the article deals with how the media spins it as race but it boils down to police arrogance..when the bottom line is class issues that continue to divide the country and are the root of all the problems. This is easily attributable to the health care reform - so I thought I'd put just one page of the article here - it is at truthdig.com...sammieswife.

Let us accept the facts staring us in the face—that demonstrably we are no longer a republic. We are no longer governed by laws, only by armed men and force. This is just like the days of Billy the Kid. You have an armed man going down a dusty street and that is authority. And it has come to this for us.

If the media will ever become alert to real news, they will put paid to their universal cry that no matter what happens of a disagreeable nature in the streets or elsewhere in public, it is due to racial hatred. Both corporal and president made no attempt to clear this matter up. Arguably, you can say that everything is subject to it or tarred by it, but it was not true in this case. The young man with the gun seems to have been correct on these issues; he was training others like himself to put up with the lesser breeds, and to say that this was race-inspired because both the president and the professor were black—am I making too subtle a point?—is a serious, murderous mistake in a country like ours.

As I listened to the fallout from these stirring events, I wondered if this might be a moment when the media would reform themselves and only print actual news; for one thing, not all explosions of temper and so on are attributable to race. It would be nice if the media realized how dangerous they when they begin to falsify motives which, to be blunt, they have no authority to do. If a black person is in any way in a jam of any kind, it is because he is responding to racism or if a white person goes berserk over anything with anybody, racism drove him to it. This is a great, great red herring like some giant whale gliding across the pages of police dockets.

So let me mention the real issue. The real issue is class. We have the greatest divide between the very rich and the very poor of any country on Earth, surpassing even France. And this division gets wider and wider as financial disasters overwhelm us. We were already in pretty bad shape before things began to fall apart a year or two ago. We must acknowledge that our character, never much good in these matters, is now reprehensible, and the police seem to have taken it upon themselves to exact revenge for a full professor and his—plainly, in their view—insulting income, which they figure must be considerable. The days of greed through which we all lived now have not done us much good, nor have they taught us any lessons, but you cannot live long with such divisions, which in my view as an outsider overlooking the scene seems to be a nation of total liars. Everybody is lying. Television lies, candidates lie. And everyone says, “Oh they always have.” I love that excuse. Well they haven’t always done that. Sometimes lying to the people is a great mistake. And it is well-known that the rich will tell almost any lie to avoid paying taxes.

Why do you think the rest of the world cares about MY healthcare? Are they worried about me? the USA? or themselves?

Then DD, fight to have all Medicare abolished. Demand a referendum and let the people talk with their vote. Your one person dying is unlikely to be from having Medicare and further, I would add, that if any senior is financially able to, they can go to any other country and receive excellent care for far less cost - it happens daily in this country.

So, I say, let a referendum speak. The USA does not have this sort of system which would allow for a true vote on the issue but I think on one as important as this, why should the people allow corporations to dictate policy to them? That is the one true way to close the issue for once and for all and then set about changing the whole system from the ground up. The will of the people and all that good stuff....sammieswife.

People that think in terms of 'we' think collectively about what is good for the majority of the people around them instead of focusing on what is only good for a minority. That is the premise of 'we' vs 'me'. ...so yes, people who think in terms of providing healthcare through their taxes, do include your needs in their concern. People who are willing to foot the bill for YOUR healthcare and your kids, or your siblings, your parents or your friends, are in fact putting their money where their mouth is...they are willing to support your healthcare via taxes as long as it is a communal pot.

People in other countries don't really care nor are they really worried about what you do in the USA in regards to healthcare however, they have every single right to an opinion and an objection based on the lies that the American people are fed by those who oppose the same sort of care for people in their own country. Do they care about you? Most likely in as much as you care about them. Do they care about the USA? Yes, no doubt...and perhaps more than you care about their country. Is it whats good for them? Maybe - after all there are those, and the numbers grow larger every day, that do not admire, respect nor like a full blown, unregulated capitalist society and therefore will get involved in American style corporate politics in order to expose another side to it and ensure that it never invades their country to cause the same problems and create the same issues that prevail in the USA. sammieswife.

Maybe? It looks like they don't mind when our young men fight for their freedom, and care about them to the point of giving their own lives.

They didn't seem to care when their freedoms were being threatened.

And I'm sure they have examples of where that's happened. Like Japan, Germany, Canada. They just follow us in lockstep don't they.

Let them regulate their sociaties and we can take care of our own.
