Jeep....can't fault your philosophy on the different party lines. Rabid Republicans and Libertarians would push an entire country backward a few hundred years if they could. Back to the Witch Hunts to ferret out those that think differently - back to child labor as a means to financial personal responsibility; back to work houses to penalize the poor and back to selling off your daughters as servants or shipping a 12 year old thief off to hard labor in a prison camp for stealing a loaf of bread.

Purps, I've been there, and its' noooo fun. But I'm so glad there was a program available. When I was pregnant with my first child, we moved from San Francisco, where the unemployment rate was the lowest in the country at the time, to where the rest of the family lived. We just couldn't see having a baby in a SF flat with a bunch of lunatic room mates. What we didn't know, was that we moved to where the unemployment rate was the highest. We had to use every drop of savings we had before they would give us anything, so we did. We rented a tiny little cottage for 310.00 a month. I received 325.00 a month in Aid, and 70.00 a month in food stamps. I also gotta WIC, which is a wonderful program I must say. If you are not familiar, they give you coupons for certain foods. You can get cereal, milk, bread, peanut butter, cheese and juice. I think that was about it. The cool thing, is that it could only be certain kinds, nutritious and not sugary. Anyway, that left us 15.00 in cash for the month, and 17.50 a week for groceries. I was very creative with my cooking, but by the third week of the month my mom was bringing over a bag of food. We ran out of gas of course, so my husband would walk to find a job. I finally got a job at 5 months pregnant, which was awfully nice of the guy who hired me, because I obviously wasn't going to be a very spunky or long term employee. My husband worked two crappy jobs. So we took aid for 3 months. We still got medical, but we had a share of cost. Naturally the month he found a good job, and we were no longer eligible for medical, is the month the baby was born. With slight problems, which left us with an Eleven Thousand dollar hospital bill. I remember everything so vividly, because that was our waiting for the new baby time. All the little things that go with that experience. Seems like a million years ago now.

Oh here's something fun though. When he finally got that decent job, it was for a very small company and the owner was a really good guy. He would have contests and stuff to motivate his guys. My husband won the very first month he was there. The prize was something like a weekend in Tahoe or something. We asked him if we could take that amount of money, and spend it on baby stuff. We got a stroller and a care seat and a bunch of things we needed. It was amazing.

That's just the way I see it Sammieswife. Like this country was on an upward trajectory for 200 years, with a few bumps, no doubt. But still upward. Then the last 30-40 has been a struggle to hold on to those great advances. A flat line, with the last eight being definitely downward. Lost ground.

That was a very nice thing to say about a capitalist.

Since I already opened a huge can of worms about my situation I want to say something else. I apologize for taking over the thread and I thank those that listen.

My story made news in the little community I lived in. An editor for a newspaper, Patsy Pipkin, wrote an article about it. To make a long and interesting story short, The then govener, Bill Clinton heard about the story and I was invited to go before the policy writers of Arkansas and tell my situation. My struggles and hardships in dealing with the system. One thing that I came away with after two hours in the top story of the Donaghy Building in LR, AR is that the people that allocate the monies want this to work for the people. The taxes we all pay at one time or another to the state and federal governments are to work for the people. They knew there was waste, mismanagement, poor supervision and crooked employees. I was not your average person that fell into the system. I was asked to tell my story nationwide and I declined. Mostly because I was a witness and another because I was weary from the fight and struggle. As I posted earlier in this thread, my ex paid money back to the state that was given to HIS children for health coverage until the youngest was 18 years old. Of course there is so much more to this story, having him extradited from Texas, thrown in jail and forced to go to court more than once for failure to pay child support. The other reason for not going nationwide is I did not want to be a posterchild for welfare. I wanted to move away from the situation as quickly as possible. I was also an active JW (told this story at an assembly for a part on being in subjection to superior authorities) and I felt my energy would be used better preaching door to door!!!!

Again I apologize for having gotten so personal on this thread and I thank you too. We can debate stats all day long, but maybe one persons personal experiance will help another to see how much the system helped a mother of five raise her children with the only help she had available to her.

jeep, and yes my ex was an abusive alcoholic man, and I decided if I had to shovel shit the rest of my life, my kids and I would not be exposed to that treatment any longer and hopefully not pass this on to their kids. Here is a little video from John Steinbeck on why he wrote The Grapes of Wrath.

    much love,

    purps
