The word "atheist" was first used by the Romans....to describe Christians who rejected all the dozens of gods the Romans believed in!

LWT,
I understand that you don't feel particularly concerned about following one religion or another or having faith or not at any given time.
I just don't think you are being 100% honest with yourself, I think that you do care enough to ASK these questions.
Our lives are a spiritual journey for our soul. We should always appreciate the journey, value our life, live it authentically, and never stop seeking to find the Answers. If you want to call yourself an atheist, an agnostic, a believer, a Christian, a Buddahist, etc., go ahead. The label won't stop the process.

Haha. Maybe those two aren't mutually exclusive. I certainly ask many questions. I definitely try to actively expose myself to the beliefs/reasonings of others, believers and non-believers.
Maybe I'm so fascinated with the investigation that I don't concern myself with the final report.
LWT,
I have to agree, the journey is far mor einteresting than the destination.
Even as a Christian, I care far less about the afterlife than I do about the here and now, about discovering God here and now.
My faith has very little to do with what may happen when I am dead.
Best argument for atheism: People who believe in a god.

And the award for best supporting poster in a thread goes to,....

the author's point about rejecting the
myriads of gods who have come before
was summed up in a statement i have
adapted as a deflection to conversation
about my lack of belief.....
everyone is atheist about most gods....
some just go one god further than others
amen

I agree with Richard's Ruse's comments, although Mary Midgley did put up a strawman by comparing inanimate objects like rocks with genes. Genes DO make things happen and it has been proved that cells (which are controlled by genes) can be "reprogrammed." Dr. Deepok Chopra discusses this in Ageless Body, Timeless Mind.
That being said, it does no good for skeptics to ridicule believers IF the believers are not trying to shove their beliefs down someone's throat. I have little respect for atheists who do the same thing. I'm am neither an atheist nor a true believer. I'm a true "I-don't-know-what-the-hell-is-going-on" type of person.
