The Issue is Not that God WANTS Us to Suffer...

Faith is sort of like science, but different in one key area. You start out with an unproven premise and you build upon that on the basis of measurable evidence gathered.

If you built upon your unproven premise on the basis of personal beliefs, that would make you a theist, not a scientist.

See the difference? No? Somehow, I thought you wouldn't.

Science will never support faith because they are two processes that are the antithesis of each other.

Scientific discovery may lend scientific support to a belief that was previously only a matter of faith. That is not the same thing as the process of science supporting the process of faith.

Once something is proven by science, then the belief in that thing is no longer a matter of faith. It has been proven in a measurable way.

And before anyone puts up the tired old argument of "atheism can't be proved", let me just circumvent it by stressing that atheism is not science. Science is a method of fact gathering and studying. People constantly throw around the term "science" in these discussions as if it is some sort of living entity that replaces God and is worshipped.

That analogy is ridiculous and is never used by actual scientists. It is only used by religionists who can't conceive of any other methodology of fact gathering as more accurate than faith and personal testimony.

AGuest Your last post was one of the best you have written, in my opinion.

The logic is flawed but it would be churlish of me to spoil your spirited defence of why you live by faith. Coupled with the way you have cleverly made those without faith look limited, it is a worthy retort. You have the makings of a gladiator.

I no longer come on this forum to win debates but to be entertained and hopefully entertain.

I can only say - salute.

Which is why I can't put my faith "in the Bible", dear NVL

    This doesn't match...

"This [is] the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he them. Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created." Genesis 5:1, 2

    ... this.

Pick one, Shelby. You quote scripture when it's convenient whenever it matches whatever dream/voice you had last night and reject it whenever it suits you.YOu put your faith it in often enough when it supports your POV.

Tell me, has God/Jesus told you which parts of the bible are right and which aren't? Can you ask, I would really like to know.

Because... prior to conception there is no vessel of flesh... and so nothing to "lead" that person... to whatever course he ultimately chooses. No "skin" yet, that such one will perhaps do "ANYTHING"... give ALL... on behalf of. No "desire" of the flesh to be exploited... because no FLESH, yet.

But he did in three cases, so clearly he can in some cases. And he knew what Jesus would do before before he was born before there was flesh. So clearly he CAN.

NVL, you know full well that men were forced to marry women only after rape couldn't be proven. If it was proven, the man was to be put to death.

Syl, I would LOVE to see that scripture.

Sort of like science, right, dear Glad?

No, the exact opposite of science.

I mean, for example, a man of "science" believes man can fly (albeit, perhaps with the help some kind of apparatus); unfortunately, however, he lives about 3,000 (if not double/triple that) years before "science" can prove him right.

No, Shelby. Not like that at ALL. At the time the man 3000 years ago believes that, it's 100% true that man cannot fly. Can you show an example of man that beleived to make it relevant in ANY way?

Also, how can you say that science is NEVER going to support faith?

Becase faith is being sure of what is hoped for and sure of what you cannot prove. Science rests on the ability to prove.

I think you're proving Shelby's point in the above post.

You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means :)
