palm, I don't think any of this matters compared to overpopulation, there will not be enough "stuff" left to support humanity and all hell will break loose. Can you see America deciding that for a successful economy they need to start consuming less for a change? No. That is when problems start.

The oil sands are much more environmentally friendly than the horizontal drilling and high volume fracturing that is taking place using carciogenic fracturing oil / diesel fuel.

Trust me when I say this: The boreal forest is huge, gargantuan actually, and the area affected is relatively small. It is a forest I could care less if I ever see again. (my curtains are closed right now, Plumb tree) ;D

Call me a cynic. In my corner of the world, I have seen people protesting against everything and anything. Almost all of the time the protesters didn't really have a clue about what it was that they were protesting against. They didn't even suspect how they were being manipulated, though sometimes that happens transparently. But protesting and feeling different and better than others is a nice thing. People don't think too much.

It's clear that oil needs to come from somewhere. But most people who protest wouldn't give up a bit of their lifestyle. For some reason, we always want to have our cake and eat it, too.

We all want to have our car, and drive it too.

The oil is drying up it's a fact. When we grow it, it will compete for space with food.

Up here, we are told there is enough oil in the oil-sands alone to supply the rest of the world for the next 100 years.

I joined the oil and gas industry about 5 months ago. What I've learned first-hand in the last few months, is that only in the past 5-7 years is the industry finally evolving past the inefficient pre-WWII drilling and well completion technology that was mostly outdated 25 years ago. One reason for that is the "easy" oil is mostly gone. Another reason is that the previous generation of "good ole boy" oil men is mostly retired or very close to it. The industry is now being filled with forward-thinking young professionals who are both more conscious of the environmental impact of drilling, and a desire to use the latest technology to make drilling more efficient, with more reservoir recovery than previously thought possible.

I can't understate the effect of new blood in the industry. After the US oil bust in the early 1980's, there was a severe shortage of new engineers coming into the petroleum industry. The result has been many engineers working well into their 80's, using the same out-dated techniques. These guys are now retiring (and dying) in droves, and being replaced by 25-30 year olds with a fresh perspective and a grasp on the latest technologies.

Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing is still evolving, but now with multi-lateral wells (multiple deviated and horizontal wellbores coming from only one bore at the surface) the environmental footprint for new wells is many times less than it was only a dozen years ago.

Honestly, I was very disappointed when I started this job with how far behind in technology usage this industry is compared to other industries. But being in the position to see the new products coming out in the past 5 years, and those in development, I see they are rapidly trying to catch up and I'm actually quite excited to be a part of it.

Still, I do believe we are speeding up the warming of the environment by burning fossil fuels, so we have a long way to go, and a short time to get there.

    Bumping for designs' interest.

How did your meeting go about the oilsands/pipeline, etc?

lol Thanks! Always learning aren't we. My current Greenhippiehemploaferprotest concerns San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant and its safety violations and the exit strategy should we have a 7.0 earthquake. www.sanclementegreen.org
