I have no idea how this stuff works, so forgive me. Why does the stuff need to be piped across America? Why can't they refine it in Canada?

If the government of Alberta thought ahead more than next week they probably would, but they're politicians.
Strymeckirules-It isn't only about powering the world. Crude oil is used in the manufacture of virtually everything, plastics, fabrics, medicines, roofing materials, food-yes food. Try powering a tractor using solar energy, it isn't going to happen. Not everyone lives in an area where solar energy or wind energy would be a constant. Wind turbine placement requires huge clearings of forest in area that are forested, to prevent the wind from being blocked. Many parts of the north continents do not see enough sun on a regular basis to heat their homes (Norway, anyone?).
You are using products that were mined from the earth everytime you use your computer, phone, eat, wear clothing or do just about anything.

Refineries are uber-expensive.
It's cheaper for us to send it to you un-refined.
And it's cheaper for you to refine it yourself.
Painted toe nail
Fertilizer is made from oil/natural gas
Diesel fuel to power farm equipment
very good point you made
we eat oil
Alberta oil sands oil powers the whole Canadian economy
and anyone with a bit of ambition can have a piece of the economic pie

But only if fossil fuel profiteers allow it.
Beks, I didnt' know that about Germany. That's interesting.
But I dont' believe that would work up here. Our 5-6 hours of daylight during the winter months wouldn't generate enough power to keep us warm for the 8 straight weeks of -40 weather.
