New Chapter, be honest, do you personally ask every single one of the large proportion of people you meet how old they think the earth is? Come on. Probably the truth is, you are just making the assumption that these folks are part of the 40%.

I'm not upset by your quotes. I'm just really surprised that you actually believe that 40% of Americans believe the earth is under 10,000 years old and that religion is to blame for it. Public schools do NOT teach that the earth is less than 10,000 years old. And honestly, many Americans do not even go to church regularly. Catholic seminaries don't even teach that the earth is that young.

FHN, I'm not making an assumption. This is a statistic that is often quoted. Statistics are not accumulated by asking 100% of the people, but by asking a cross section. You too are making assumptions, but have provided no statistics.

I will not discuss the percentage anymore, because if you do not trust the sources, then it is a worthless discussion, and it seems silly to get caught up in a number when the effects are clearly seen.

Could it be more of a problem with assumption, than it is an American problem? Could it be more a lack of knowledge about what different religions and Christian sects really believe and teach, that it is an American problem? Could be.

Could be. I'm not American, so I really can't say. I just wanted to give some perspective outside of what might be NC's perspective in your guys' country on belief and believers... and I do not doubt her e x periences, but all of our e xperiences are limited to, well, us.

New, you are intelligent. You need to think outside the box on that quote. Think about who made the quote. Really think about it. Can you say that there is not strong bias there?

I would state that I 100% agree with separation of church and state. At least that way, from my perspective, the name of God and His Son cannot be tainted by political ambition and greed/hypocrisy of nations and their leaders.

I'm not going to apologize, I give Americans much more credit than does Richard Dawkins.

I also agree that religion has no business in law or policy making.

I would not say that my belief in the statistic has any bearing on my intellegence. Give me your statistic. Also it will not be a reflection on my intelligence if I continue to believe that statistic. Thank you for not bringing my intelligence into this. It is a viable stat.

Here is a link to Huffpo quoting that statistic. They got the stat from a Gallup poll. Yes Dawkins may have a bias, but many intelligent people give some credence to gallup to be unbiased in their polling methods.
