Illegal immigrant applies to be admitted to the Florida Bar!

You see illegal aliens as a grave threat. I don't. The law school and character committee are more than competent to deal with the situation. If he lied, it is one thing. If he did not, it is another. It also depends on the wording of the FLA application to be admitted. There is nothing credible with being a U.S. citizen. Unlike Justitia, I don't all the facts. I don't know the facts b/c they were not reported. So unless people here have special access to pending matters before the character committee, they don't know the details. Whether or not he is admitted is fact specific. Facts are sorely lacking.

It is conjecture. Much ado about nothing. What does citizenship? After he does does a pro forma challenge, will the law student/grad be naturalized? I'm not the National Enquirer or Fox News. Facts are crucial to me. We did not the courtesy of objective reporting when this was posted. As usual, it was from some rag to express moral outrage. Others do not share your outrage.

If you believe in law so much, why don't allow the law deal with it? Illegal aliens were welcome when they were Northern European. OUr immigration pollicies have been very racist. No, I am not shocked nor do I believe the FLA authorities need my input.

Get enraged about an illegal alien riding the NYC subway for free. Distractions.

    That's a red herring.

There was no such thing as illegal immigration 100 years and more ago.

It was full, unrestricted immigration. Get off the boat at Ellis Island, get yourself processed, and you were good to go.

    And so what begins?

The seed of a conspiracy theory. Someone HIGHER is protecting him. There is always a conspiracy theory, and there is always a seed. That's the potential I see in the comment.

i hope newchaper says something else smart too.

I'm sorry. Did you have something specific to address with me? Or did you expect me to say something smart for real? Or were you suggesting that I wouldn't say something smart? I'm just not sure where your post is leading.

Ted Kennedy played a huge role in establishing open immigration. Certain countries, mostly Northern European, had more slots than Southern European. When I grew up, Americans were enraged that Italians, Hungarians, and other Southern Europeans were invading and destroying our lifestyle. The Irish and german were viewed as threats. Once your national slots were up, it was tough luck. It was very racial.

Chinese slots were very restricted. A friend's father from Hong Kong met regularly with Kennedy to have more Chinese slots assigned.

You could not just walk in here.

Hamilton emigrated from the West Indies. His father was Scottish. I forget his mother's ancestry. He faced much opposition as an alien.

I do read American history. This is not a discussion I saw in only one source.

It's revealing to gauge people reactions to two simple words: illegal immigrant. To me, the word "illegal" stands out. Doesn't matter what follows it. It could be "illegal porn star", and I'm stuck wondering about the illegal part of it, porn star be damned. Others flock to the second word "immigrant" and let the chips fall where they may, never mind the adjective placed before it. Then we get into this drawn out and convoluted explanation, and the immigrant is assumed to be a color other than white, while the perpetrator who dared to ask for ID is racist. The usual suspects line up, left vs. right, and the right is already at a disadvantage because they have to shake off these nasty allegations of racism before they can even make their point.

The reason why the idea of an illegal immigrant licensed attorney is so ridiculous is because the very integrity of the law is being challenged due to the illegal nature of one's very status. The US is not the only country that has laws against illegal immigrants or people who have overstayed their visas. We're actually quite lenient. Obama's uncle, who's been illegal for more than 10 years was just granted a driver's license. How the same country that allows that and still manages to be called racist because of immigration policies is beyond my pay grade to comprehend. But we are meant to be at the forefront of any controversy stemming from it.

There is a reason why there's a Bar association in every state. It is to make sure that there are only qualified individuals (i.e. ones who have gone to ABA approved law schools and graduated), ones who will uphold the integrity of the law as an Officer of the Court, and finally, to put each applicant through a grueling entrance exam. The point is that the path to becoming a practicing attorney is a long and arduous route, and someone's legal status in the country he or she is to practice should have been taken care of in number 13 of the 1500 or so steps it takes to practice law. It also speaks poorly of the individual's integrity and respect for the law if they are in continual violation of it. I wouldn't want such a person as my legal representation any more than I would permit a physician who I knew to be habitually abusing illegal drugs such as crystal meth or heroin to lay a finger upon me.

Do allow us the pleasure of being the first to know of any country that welcomes and tolerates illegal immigrants, and then us 'racists' will be more than happy to discuss paths to citizenship for these people.

It makes me laugh even today. My family is Dutch. They would go on about how dark the Italians were. When my brother started school in an urban area, my mom asked my bro if there were any colored kids in his class. It was just wanting to know general info. He was five. Yes, and then he named all these sicilian names.

The older groups become in groups. I like reading about New Amsterdam. The Dutch/British division was so strong. They did not get along well.

We are an immigrant nation. Perhaps not so much in the beginning. NY was always suspect for having too many foreigners. (some Spanish and Portugese traders). I am curious about countries, like Holland or Scandavian ones, that have very strong blood lines going way back.

Bar associations exist to promote lawyers. The state regulates the bar, usually through a bar administration agency. It is not left to private hands. It may be different in some states. Bar associations can offer group health insurance plans, auto discounts, and other perks. Most of my continuing legal education courses are private.

My local community college offers a 2 year paralegal course.

    We are an immigrant nation

We are also a nation that promotes the rule of law.

Here is a link that has the amicus briefs. The Dream Bar Association is trying to rely on an implied contracts argument: he has disclosed to every school that he is undocumented. That argument places Florida schools in the position of policing immigration, so I doubt the Court will bite on that one. A Congresswoman goes on about how this wouldn't be an issue if the Dream Act had passed. I agree, and I think we need some fast-track legislation for situations such as his. However, the Dream Act has not passed, and it is not the law.
