It's not just not in agreement with the gospel use of the word generation. It simply makes no sense. It's gobbledygook; a slap in the face to anyone with even a modicum of intelligence and wit.

Why stop at two overlapping groups? Why not three or four or five, and just call that a generation? Maybe we are still living in the same generation as Jesus in fact!

Well spotted, page 9 of the September Watchtower: four generations, not "one overlapping generation". The Watchtower contradicts its own twisted definitions.

QUOTE - The current teaching on the generation is basically that the current members of the GB will live to see the great tribulation.
hmmm... I'm not sure where you got that from. Most believe that they will live to see the GT but there is nothing in their definition that makes that any part of the criteria

At a district convention 3 or 4 years ago, Geoff Jackson (GB member) spelled out quite explicitly that the "overlap" occurs only once. He explicitly stated that Armageddon must come "soon" because "we [referring to anointed who overlapped] are getting to be pretty old".

Of course he provided no reason why there can only be one "overlap". He jsut asserted it, and since it came "from the top", who is going to argue it? A bunch of slimy apostates?

Of course, Jackson is not yet 60, or if just barely. Given the cushy low-stress life of a Bethelite top-dog, he can expect to live another 30-35 years.

"A generation means two generations, no more, no less, because we say so."

    Excellent logic.

I completely agree with Vanderhoven7 and his analysis. Since leaving the Witnesses, I have been examining preterist teaching and have concluded they are right to say that Jesus' great Olivet prophecy applied only to his contemporaries who would see the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple. Any interpretetation that seeks a fulfillment in our time or beyond is not rooted in what the Scriptures say.

we are approaching 2014 a decade from 1914,

the Over Lapping Generation that was lapped up by the JWs can make the 100 year anniversary of

    !975: 2075

we will get to celebrate two failed prophecies and their centennials, and

the 144 000 will not be sealed (complete) yet. celebrate 1935 when that failed.

I got it from the GB: (http://m.wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/2010446)

    “The Righteous Ones Will Shine”

Brother Barr made clear that the gathering would not continue indefinitely. He referred to Matthew 24:34, which says: “This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.” He twice read the comment: “Jesus evidently meant that the lives of the anointed ones who were on hand when the sign began to be evident in 1914 would overlap with the lives of other anointed ones who would see the start of the great tribulation.” We do not know the exact length of “this generation,” but it includes these two groups whose lives overlap. Even though the anointed vary in age, those in the two groups constituting the generation are contemporaries during part of the last days. How comforting it is to know that the younger anointed contemporaries of those older anointed ones who discerned the sign when it became evident beginning in 1914 will not die off before the great tribulation starts!

Of course he doesn't say 'current GB members' so I suppose you can say it's not official doctrine, but I think it is obviously what he means by 'younger anointed contemporaries'

Of course, Jackson is not yet 60. . . .he can expect to live another 30-35 years.

And Sanderson is only 48, so he's potentially got another 50 years left in him. . . .

Of course at any moment now the UN will declare war on false religion, the GT gets kicked off, and those bastards get sucked up to heaven.

The chief virtue of elastic is its capacity for stretching around impossibly large waists. The chief virtue of overlapping generations is their capacity for stretching over impossibly large periods of time. When time is not running out anywhere nearly as soon as your beliefs said it would run out, you need spiritual elasticity to cover over the growing period of time spent waiting...
