I don't actually follow the "I could care less what anyone else believes when it comes to determining MY beliefs" framed mentality. There are people all over the world who have experienced far greater, grander, horrifying, and traumatic events than I have. I am very interested in the way they handle their own path on this world.

Point taken, but don't overlook MY point: notice I said "when it comes to DETERMINING MY beliefs", where the key word you seemingly overlooked was being 'determining' or 'deciding'. Obviously I'm going to hear out all of the various opinions before I decide, since I'd be a fool not to hear out other opinions on a subject.

However, in the end, me myself and I have the sole DUTY to decide on what belief I personally will hold, and that decision cannot and SHOULD NOT be delegated to anyone else, much less based on potentially-fallacious arguments that are appeals to popular opinion (eg "most people believe in this religion", etc).

    *sigh*

Adam... you're doing the Jehovah's Witness thing were "key words" are used as a crux of a point. LOL.

In discussion of philosophy I try to avoid definitive definitions of specific wording for two reasons (1) the concept has to be able to be translated to other languages or other dialects within our own language and should be able to be described using a variety of different words, and (2) if specific wording is needed to relay a point, then one's point is too specific and probably not adjustable to other areas of life/living.

(This doesn't apply if there is an actual debate about language, mind you... lol)

For example, "determining" is a conclusion based off reasoning, thought, and once processed information is taken into account. "Deciding" simply describes the act of answering a question or choice. The two are not synonumous (also, one is a verb and one is an adjective).

I know it sounds like I'm being an asshole. I apologize. What I'm trying to demonstrate is that we can get VERY specific about wording... in which case the end result is us arguing about words... NOT the important issue of discussing concepts, philosophy, and walking on this planet with appreciation and understanding of one another (generally speaking).

I fully understood your concept. It made sense to me. How you achieve your belief (whether it be determined after reviewing information, decided after tired frustration, presented to you randomly from nowhere, or stumbled upon while drunk) the application of such decision is in your control pivot point and you are proud of that (which you should be).

I agree with this... it seems to work for you. I do something very similar. I do not deligate what works for me, but I do like understanding what works for other people (or sometimes the illusion of what works... LOL). I describe it differently, but the concept is very similar, and I appreciate you taking the time to clairfy it. I didn't mean any disrespect or assumption by what I wrote. I was just describing my growth process, nothing more. Apologies if it came across as a counter argument or judgemental.

What others believe is perhaps of less interest than why they believe it.

One can learn a lot by asking why people think the way they do about particular topics, it is also a good way of gently challenging those beliefs without the need to engage in combat which happens quite a lot on this forum and rarely seems to lead to either party conceding.

All life on earth past and present is proof that biological evolution exists.

Reflect on this bit of information.

In January 2013, astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics used Kepler's data to

estimate that "at least 17 billion" Earth-sized exoplanets reside in the Milky Way Galaxy alone.

There millions of galaxies in the universe.

Just a thought: I may have missed it but did anyone on this thread actually say evolution doesn't happen?

Then god created the big bang, wonderful.

Since there are probably a billion planets in the universe, it is therefore most likely that there are other planets with biological evolution

    occurring on those planets.

Well, it wasn't clear if you did, and hence why I felt the need to clarify! In fact, my initial word choice was ambiguous, which all the more caused me to clarify!

Your words in red suggested some confusion existed, as if I were a close-minded bigot who refused to listen to the experiences and opinions of others:

I don't actually follow the "I could care less what anyone else believes when it comes to determining MY beliefs" framed mentality. There are people all over the world who have experienced far greater, grander, horrifying, and traumatic events than I have. I am very interested in the way they handle their own path on this world.

In hindsight, 'decide' would've been a better word choice, since 'determining' implies the process of searching for possible alternatives, whereas 'deciding' implies actually making a selection; obviously I care about their opinions during the determination process, whereas I don't care what their opinions are after I make my choice.

    Better?

Unless I also missed, then no, I don't think so.
