    What I teach my kids:

    - Critical thinking

    - Be nice to others, help out if you can

    - Don't be a bully, never be cruel

    - Live your life and make it a good one. I don't care what they do for a career, but be happy in your life.

The good old dayes, when there were more murders, overt racism, homophobia and all sorts of bigotry. When women might be responsible for their own rape and a real man could beat his wife and kids.

The good old dayes. Worse by any standard exept peoples rose-tinted speculation today.

the good old days - THEN - when businesses took care of their employees and rewarded for years of service and gave fair pay.

NOW - businesses have their employees bend over and take it, cut benefits, no more pensions and rewards for years of service, cut pay, layoff and hire cheap labor, take advantage of job market to squeeze out as much work as possible and cut pay and benefits as low as possible and have them scraping by just so the owners/stock/etc can make a few extra bucks

THEN - many many many years ago when government taxed as low as possible, even gave back a surplus, priority was what was best for the people and the country, laws written to protect the people.

NOW - corruptions rules, change laws to allow sponsor companies of politicians to screw everyone else, politicans in with military contractors having a yearly increasing open checkbook for as much as they want, allowing insurance industry to squeeze everyone and changing laws to force it and each year squeeze more, politican tied energy, medical, military, food, bank industries to go unchecked and always favor the corporations vs the people.

THEN - I did school in 80's and 90's and never worried about school shootings

NOW - since Columbine, they seem to be a weekly/monthly event

Bottom line, things have improved in certain areas and in others have declined.

The areas you list are indeed problems, however, are they ethical/moral problems?

    - Job security: Many of us live in a global market now, depending on our job. Things are fluctuating more as a result. Plenty of people are not affected by this, such as those with regionally-oriented jobs like electricians. Also, you forgot to include any statistics here proving your assertion that employment was better back then.

    - Corruption: This is a problem with the U.S., but some other countries have been more corrupted than this for years. Don't extrapolate regional issues to the world-wide stage.

    - School shootings: This is a matter of mentally ill people who have access to guns. It has no bearing on ethics if someone is sick in the head.

Let's take stealing for example. How would you teach a 3 or 4 year old not to steal, and in a way in which if they were

not being watched and could get away with it, that their conscience would kick in?

You don`t need religion to teach kids not to steal..

the good old days - THEN - when businesses took care of their employees and rewarded for years of service and gave fair pay.

Do you know why Unions were Formed back in the Good Old Days?!..

THEN - many many many years ago when government taxed as low as possible, even gave back a surplus, priority was

what was best for the people and the country, laws written to protect the people.

What planet did that happen on?

NOW - corruptions rules, change laws to allow sponsor companies of politicians to screw everyone else..

Your claiming political corruption is something new?!

Bottom line, things have improved in certain areas and in others have declined.

The existence of law gets in your way. The same basic core of crimes exist today as when established churches ruled. Law was not rewritten whole when Henry VIII left the Roman Catholic Church. Federal and state establishments are forbidden in the United States. There is no state religion. Our basic criminal, torts, and contract law remain the same. People respect the law or it could not work. Groups may not appreciate some Supreme Court rulings. They grumble but federal troops are not needed to enforce compliance.

David Brooks knows better. His google searches are silly. It mostly shows word usage may have changed.

I recall the 1960s when some people believed the youth were lawless and bums, destroying Western civilization. Someone pointed to Egyptian writings from a certain dynasty. The author believed the same of youth in his day. I would wonder about the quality of your education. Perhaps you shouldl investigate what other Ethics sessions were taught.

Our poli sci prof was determined to teach us a lesson. He was denied tenure yet allowed to stay on in the university as an adminstrator. When he passed out a handout that proclaimed the vast majority of college students favored the Viet Nam War. I was polite. My gut instinct was that it was April Fools Day. Classmates were ripping it up and throwing it on the floor in front of him. Others laughed. He said we never left the embrace of the East Coast elite colleges. Did we know a single college student was favored the War? No! People were rude. Well, he told us the polling company that reputable. There were lots of college students between the coasts. We lived in a media stronghold. When class was dismissed, we could not even discuss it. Our brains were fried.

"when businesses took care of their employees and rewarded for years of service and gave fair pay"

You mean, before pensions, welfare, or unions when we had indentured servanthood and an employee could be ditched on the whim of the employer? You mean the good old days of child labour?
