Third, I don't post on topics for which I'm not a SME. That alone would solve a lot of issues on this site if others followed the same.-DJS

What does SME satnd for?Small and Medium Enterprises is all I could find. Kate xx

I'm sorry Kate; using acronyms expecting everyone to understand them is rude. Subject Matter Expert (SME). I know lots about lots, but I don't enter detailed discussions about topics for which I know little or nothing. I just pop some popcorn, pour a glass of wine and watch you, Cofty, Snare and others have at it. Great fun!

Most rational arguments break down at the point of difference in value judgements - it is generally at this point that the argument descends to name calling. - Fraz

Good point Fraz. I agree with this, but I don't think it's the majority of members on here that are like this. I think that some are isolated and need some kind of human contact after being victims of a destructive cult. I would say that newly exited ones or new posters finding their way can be like this.

Most posters are here for advice or to try and impart advice. Very few are here with other motives. I think if we try and get to know those who we are debating with, and look up their past posts we can all understand one another better and enjoy debates with our differences. After all life would be boring if we all agreed about everything.

    DJS,

Thanks, I don't think it's important to be an expert on every thread you go on. You are an atheist I am not. We disagree, but I like to chit chat with you. I am suffering big style and moving on is a lot easier when I come here to chit chat. If I get something wrong no biggy.

I am isolated, and enjoy your comapny DJS. Thanks for chatting.

    Kate,

Ditto. Too bad that damned ocean is between us (damned ocean!). You add a lot to this site; your presence would be sorely missed. You make an excellent point. If everyone would examine their own motives for being here - and for posting - that would help a lot. I knew of this site a decade ago but only joined about 11 months ago. As I've stated before, I was busy living life to the full. I'm here because I am narcissistic (and maybe a bit naieve) enough to think my experience and knowledge may help some exiting or thinking about exiting the Borg. You, DearKate, I am certain have already helped many, much more than I.

Hi Kate - my comment was general in nature rather than directed at members of JWN but it is also applicable here from time to time. Hang in there my friend. Chyeers Fraz

Interesting thing I've noted, those most high on preaching love and getting along are often those that judge and accuse people the most. Perhaps I'll actually note all this down in a spreadsheet someday and make a chart...

Hi Viviane - I am happy for you to challenge me as I challenge you and your fellow evangelistic Atheists. At the end of the day the threads speak for themselves. I make my observations - if you don't agree or think I am being unfair, tell me why and support your argument. Cheers Fraz

Here's a point many believers don't get. That It's absurd to accept and even
welcome public debate on this forum over politics, science, medicine, economics, gender, sexuality, education, the role of government, etc... and then get
appalled and insulted when religion is treated as just another hypothesis about
the world, one that can be debated and criticized like any other.

Hortensia - you seem to be an ultra-rationalist to the point that it is almost an ideology.

Not sure what that means exactly. I hope I'm a rationalist, I know I'm mostly pragmatic and a realist. I like learning new stuff as much as possible, but I've gotten to an age and level of experience that makes me question everything. I want to know why you believe something, what is the evidence that convinces you. "I believe" isn't evidence, faith isn't evidence, it's just wishful thinking.

It's funny that a thread I started really as a bit of whining has lasted several days and gotten so many comments.
