calling himself moderate doesn't really mean anything?- myelaine

The problem lies in that self proclaimed moderate Muslims are viewed as conservative by the general public. The term is too abigious. Kate xx

    dear Kate...

"The problem lies in that self proclaimed moderate Muslims are viewed as conservative by the general public. The term is too abigious."...

That statement has been made and specific examples noted on other threads. Regardless of what is discussed on this or any other thread muslim people will self-identify as "moderate".

I guess I fail to see the point of you starting this thread devoted to that statement.

    myelaine,

The point of the thread is to build awareness that the term "moderate Muslim" can be defined in many different ways. So really when we pigeon hole someone as a "moderate Muslim" only we know what we mean by that term. The point also of this thread is to show that all Muslims are idividuals and when we meet a Muslim we should not jump to conclusions about what they believe.

The article on my OP makes some really good points about the term moderate Muslim, myelaine clearly you not seeing the point of the thread has to do with the fact you have not read the article.

In every topic started about islam on this forum (except for a few pot stirrers) most everyone HAS made a distinction between the muslim individual, their practices and islam as a religion. The reason we can make a distinction is because we ARE aware of the fact there are differences in the extent of personal faithfulness to the koran and the teachings of mohammad. Yes, as people on the outside looking in, words like moderate and conservative are ambiguous but that fact doesn't bother muslims, does it?

most people on this forum who have been discussing islam and its adherents have made or concur with the same general statement as you have made...your thread is not reaching the right audience and that's why I said I don't see the point in starting it.

'Muslims are victims of their religious leaders and extremist organisations' - you missed out the word 'some'.

Yes, some muslims (to you and me that would be the rank and file) are victims.

But their oppressors, the religious leaders and extremist organisations, are also muslim.

This is the bit that some western liberals find unpalatable.
