What really is a moderate Muslim?

the majority of Islam's members find a way to marginalize and ignore such beliefs.

Millions of muslims have no idea what the quran says. They may learn to recite it by rote in Arabic but never read it in their native language.

However they do acquire the culture of the quran including a morbid fear of hell and a certainty that all non-muslims kafir are going there.

They understand that according to Al, women are possessions of men and female sexuality is to be feared and controlled.

Exactly, Cofty. The whole reason for Muslim women covering up is because female sexuality is seen as SO strong that in order to prove their modesty, they must be veiled so as not to inflame desires of men they're not related to. Supposedly, this frees women to not be thought of as sexual beings but it really exacerbates the emphasis placed on women as the cause of inappropriate behavior by men. Same thing happened a few hundred years ago within Christian religions where male adultery was considered a normal lapse but women were severely punished for it. I'm not really sure why women in western culture are not speaking out against this more vociferously and calling it what it is - subjugation and contol of women.

Which is why there is a real problem of sexual violence by Muslim men that nobody wants to talk about for fear of being labelled racist.

They are taught that the sight of female flesh will cause a man to be unable to control his urges. If he acts on them then her husband and or father and brothers will have to take revenge to protect their honour (whatever that means) and then chaos fitna will ensue. And it will all be the fault of the woman for flashing her legs.

Muslim men raised with this nonsense view unprotected women as fair game. They are raised to believe it is not their fault. In many muslim countries a woman cannot walk alone outdoors without being verbally and physically attacked by men.

Uneducated daughters become ignorant mothers who raise ignorant sons who perpetuate the tyranny.

    So true, Cofty.

I really hope that people realize that excusing this by labelling those who disagree as racist really stop to think about all of the struggles that women have had to overcome in the past couple of hundred years in western culture. Women only got the right to vote in western society about 100 years ago (give or take which country) and we still struggle with equal pay for equal work, domestic violence, and other issues. We've come a long way but seeing this extreme misogeny defended on any level is troublesome. The Muslim men women I work with are truly lovely people for the most part and it's not about them individually, it's about what their religion is teaching them and pressuring them to believe and pass on to their children. It really bothers me...

I agree. Our freedoms and equalities have been hard-won. There must be zero compromise with those who would drag society backwards.

Immigrants should be expected to subscribe to our culture of equality and fairness.

The question of moderate or radical/extreme could all be answered

by giving "religious rights" the heave-ho and focusing on "human rights".

The idea of WHAT a human right is is nebulous. It may become impossible to keep a semblance law if everyone is afforded what they believe to be their human right. This article strattles muslim religious rights and human rights...

This topic has gone so far off topic and just started another debate about what are bad Islamic practices. The majority of Muslims don't prescribe to them. Calling them Moderate Muslims is pointless and inaccurate. Muslims are victims of their religious leaders and extremist organisations.

As this thread has shown, we cannot use the term moderate Muslim to describe an individual.

We can't label force stop Kate.

We are not numbers, or labels we are individual.

The trick is to live that individual life, even when we have to fight against injustice.

...so if a muslim wants to distance himself from certain practices, calling himself moderate doesn't really mean anything? doesn't that bring the "islamic religion" back to a monolithic entity where individuals are just swallowed by the "whole"?

every muslim is a victim of islam...I think so.(in the same way every JW is a victim of the WTBTS "entity")
