What really is a moderate Muslim?

A very subjective question to be sure .

You could come up with a bunch of varied answers to that based from what country and what particular sect of the religion

    you are referring to.

Because of the doctoral teachings within the Quran itself that states other religious faiths or individuals who do not worship Allah, are to be disrespected or even killed

sheds some light onto why Muslims segregate themselves from outside community and social involvement, much like many other high controlling religious cults.

    .

Unfortunately the belief in Allah and the pressing power of this imagined god has been exploited and used to empower men to their own discretion and to appeal to

their own will and desires, many times showing a complete lack of respect or empathy for other people.

One of the biggest problems with this religion is that there isn't a singular structured head of this religion that has over

all control over the majority of its followers like one can see in the Catholic religion.

So there's numerous secular groups that grow out on their own ungoverned direction, ISIS for example.

Governed by their own established interpretations of the Quran , which is really a bad thing in this modernized world.

    .

    Correct me if I'm wrong . ???

Agreed Finkelstein, although I wouldn't describe ISIS as 'secular'.

    Finkelstein,

Islam may have sects, yes. But so does Christianity.

the Catholic Church has had a pope leading it. But when others interpreted the scriptures differently- sects spun out of it anyway-the Eastern Orthodox, the Church of England, Lutherans, etc.----including the JWs.

It is a disaster for there to be power in the hands of a religious leader--everyone wants that power--and then there is sectarian violence.

If or when a religious person realizes that they must hold their own conscience before God(a god of ANY description)they will be more thoughtful--and they will be more able to discuss and change concerning many issues. They may be less afraid of the orthodoxy grabbing and punishing them. Muslims and others who believe in God should follow ther heart and not follow their leader.

Following religious leaders hasn't been good for Catholics--the ones brave enough to follow their heart are mostly wonderful (Check out Simon's addition to the thread on "Happy Columbus Day". Columbus was one kind of catholic but Bartoleme de Casa became a quite different one --and far better human being)

    Down with religious leaders.

Even "moderate" Muslims learn the words of the Qu'ran by rote, many of them not really understanding the full import of the words they repeat in Arabic if it is not their first language.

But when the words are explained to them by a Radical preacher, they spring to life, already being part of the person's very soul. Hence a "moderate" is easy to radicalise.

    Bingo !

That's why moderates are not really moderate if they are repeating the expressions regularly and claiming that they don't contribute to the issue by doing so is increasingly viewed as lame by so many.

Kind of like an irregular publisher that misses a lot of meetings who calls himself a Jehovah' witness.

The newsnight video is great and illustrates the problems that many face and great to see the moderate views so eloquently expressed.

I worked with a moderate Muslim man, he would have a beer once in awhile and never prayed in public around us at work. He celebrated Ramadan like many people celebrate Christmas.

The main stream moderate Muslims have to openly condemn the actions of the radicals, otherwise their silence is only allowing that extremism to carry on.

An amazing 46 minutes of a woman who is an outspoken Muslim writer --even more than a moderate--in a public debate with a well-known conservative Muslim from the U.K.

I can't cut n paste here so, if you are interested, youtube:Irshad Manji head to head with Mehdi Hassan

It is interesting to hear these discussions--it helps to know what Muslims think about terrorism and Islam.
