I found what Ben Afflick was saying made sense - KateW

I didn't. He wilfully misunderstood everything that Harris and Maher was saying and behaved like a spoiled teenager.

A moderate muslim by western standards would have to reject the quran as the inspired word or Al. That simply isn't an option.

Even a conservative muslim who does not approve of suicide bombing and beheading still has to subscribe to the hate and misogyny of the quran. By our enlightend standards that makes them extreme.

Cultural relativism is nonsense. Our culture isn't just different, it is better.

I am afraid I disagree, most Muslims regardless how you want to pigeon hole them do not subscribe to the hate and misogyny of the Koran they subscribe to the peace and love of the Koran. Most Muslims cannot be categorised as being moderate though, because they are also trapped in a religion that controls them and oppresses them.

    'Cultural relativism is nonsense.'

'Our culture isn't just different, it is better.' - precisely. We, as Westerners, shouldn't feel shy in pointing this out - it's not in the least bit 'racist'.

    @KateWild

Surely, trying to define 'moderate muslims' is closely linked with muslim integration into Western society?

Debating the latter may help us to define the former?

Kate - are you saying that conservative muslim is free to contradict or ignore bits of the quran they don't like?

Any muslim who expects his wife to wear a veil is a misogynist. Western feminists have failed Muslim women.

Conservative Islamic culture has no place in an enlightened society.

I'm confused. How can we rail against the WT and their extreme control techniques and not recognize the same thing to an even higher degree of extreme when it comes to Islam? We think it's beyond ridiculous that a woman is prevented from wearing a jean skirt or trousers to tour bethel or feels the need to slap a doily on her head to pray out loud, but have no problem with a woman being obligated to wear a head covering ALL the time in public? How is this moderate? At best this describes fundamentalism and any fundamentalist form of religion is dangerous because it requires people to forego critical thinking. From there, it's a pretty slippery slope into extremism.

Genuine question to anybody interested in this thread: if KateWild is correct, why has the term 'moderate muslim' been used so much that any meaning has been lost?

@Terry - having seen the video you posted I can now comment on it.

I find Ben Affleck's knee-jerk defence of Islam very strange. His opponents in this debate were not advocating 'eradicate Islam'.

Rather, they were properly trying to objectively look at and criticise Islam, something that Affleck just won't consider.

I'd like to make this point: we live in the Information Age; Islam should not get a free pass.

I'll try an analogy and see if it works.

One side thinks criticism of all Muslims is like criticizing football when NFL players abuse their wives or girlfriends.

But, this would be a false analogy because the RULES OF FOOTBALL do not call for such behavior.

On the other side, critics see ISLAM and the KORAN as calling for all Muslims to destroy the infidel even though the majority of

Islam's members find a way to marginalize and ignore such beliefs.

Debate is often at cross-purposes with each side deliberately misunderstanding the stance of their opponent.

I FOUND THIS DEBATE RATHER POINTED and interesting:
