I would put together several groups and say they are the moderates. The Ismailis first and foremost, are as far as you can get from radical Islam, after them some (not all) of the Sufis, the Ahbash, the Ibadis, and the Ahmadiyya. Basically all the Muslims that are labelled heretics and persecuted by a politicized mainstream.
What really is a moderate Muslim?

Rub a dub ,
I had a muslim friend and together with my mates and I we went to a muslim gathering. At that time I didn't have much Idear what muslims were all about. The muslim friend got really pissed as there were two muslim women with headscarf but also wearing mini skirts. As I said I didn't understand at that time but they do exist here in canberra .

Thanks Terry, I watched the debate. I think the majority of Muslims are conservative not liberal and I found what Ben Afflick was saying made sense that we can't condem a whole religion. Most Muslims are stuck in a high control religion but don't wish death on others.
I think trying to categorise them is inappropriate as all Muslims are individuals and should not be stereotyped or pigeon holed.

'Most Muslims are stuck in a high control religion but don't wish death on others' - this is a good point that I would do well to reflect on.
You're right, Kate, all muslims are individuals and should be treated as such.
However, the reaction of the world-wide muslim community (ummah) to certain events (Salman Rushdie's book, Israel vs Gaza) is also important to note. It's almost as if, if one muslim somewhere gets hurt, the whole community feels his/her pain.
How can members of this community be properly integrated into Western society?

The film dealt with radicalized Muslims and slurs to describe them. Those types of images inform the public, especially here in the US and in certain conservative Christian regions of the country.
A segment of the country thinks a Mosque naturally is a boiling pot of sedition and anarchy.
Sometimes my wry humor even eludes me..... :D

That is a good question for another thread. It's off topic here. This thread is just simply dealing with the term moderate Muslim. I think it has been used to often and has no significance, that's why I started this topic.
