Hey Lilacs, I too am an American, and I don't carry a gun either. Not because I think I would use it, but because I have a wife in the house, and we all know the crazy things that wives can do. (It has only recently that I bought her high quality, and very sharp kitchen knives.)

Call it whatever, but one things americans do best is they excell at games invented by others. Once they dominate it they make their own rule.

Ballistic....says: A) I don't agree that anyone should be able to carry leathal weapons. B) I also dont believe in domination by the richest, something that seems to be happening in your courts as copied from your government.
I agree with this:
A) The right to bear arms is probably not even a valid arguement anymore. I believe that came from the earlier days of America and their fear of being over run by some country. With the technology available now a little gun that I can afford isn't going to do much.
Don't like this happening either:
B) America started out as a country building on the middle income average man. This is not as true anymore, middle income America is disappearing. The power is in the control of the rich by default. The courts can't help themselves as they are run by lawyers and they work for, riches!

most of the true religious tyrants where in England long before America as we know it existed!
Of course they were! Wherever there is false religion and sinful man that will be the case.
The "average" dub, i.e. the R&F, in Britain have always viewed the WTS are an American religion.
The Aussies less so, perhaps because it's a closer culture. Nevertheless the average Aussie confuses Dubs with Mormons with monotonous regularity.
Cheers, Ozzie

I wanted to jump in even though I'm an American. I am so glad I live here. I'm patriotic, now that I'm no longer a JW. We have guns (for hunting) in our home but that is the only type we have. I get a bit annoyed when others critisize this country .Especially foreignors that move here and take advantage of education , financial aid, and other perks expecting that they are entitled to this while badmouthing the govt. and looking their noses down on Americans. Many countries have financial and other expectations of the US and it seems to me like there is often little gratitude rather hostility to the hand that feeds them. just a few thoughts

larc. I hope you are not basing your statement about "our boarding a US sub and retrieving the code machine" on the film?
It caused outrage here because Hollywood had re-written history and had the yanks doing it when it was actually the british who captured it.
Everybody must determine what they are willing to die for. Our country was established because our founding fathers were willing to die to establish this great country of ours. What cause is noble and honorable enough to die for? Perhaps, protecting these patriotic virtues. Or, defending your family and friends from harm. This is something that is very personal and not to be taken lightly. You will learn a lot about yourself deciding on this.
Sounds very noble ... but forgive me, wasn't America founded by people wanting to grab land, make riches and the like? Doesn't matter if it's someone else's land ... let's grab it anyway!
The problem with America is that it is constantly repeating the same mistakes that have such a big effect on the world and generate SO MUCH HATRED FOR IT.
For instance, many Iraqi's must hate Saddam. He is a cruel dictator responsible for the deaths of many etc. Now, WHO PUT HIM IN POWER AND KEPT HIM THERE?
Say it loud, say it proud - America !
It suited their interests at the time and now they want to make the same mistake again. Get rid of him and put someone else in power that suits them.
The solution is to stop meddling and let countries pick their own leaders. Israel, SaudiArabia, Egypt etc... Just look at how much better relations with Iran are now and how much sympathy the Iranian people expressed after Sep 11 compared to the "American Friendly" nations where the people suffer under unpopular and unwanted American backed leaders which builds resentment.

America is a great place and the people are on the whole fantastic but you have this big flaw and there is usually no reasoning on it!
