. would suddenly become safe and nice just because the legal status changed?

Of course not Simon. But a legal status would cut the crime associated with the profit of selling and the high price of purchasing drugs.

And once again, they are currently ILLEGAL and people STILL DO them! We decriminalize drugs and stop wasting all the money PUNISHING people and instead give them TREATMENT.

Since when have Alcohol and Ciggarettes been safe and nice????

Yes!!! Trying to control peoples' behavior creates far more problems than drugs ever will. All victimless "crimes" should be eliminated. Drugs, prostitution, pornography, gambling, etc. should all be legalized because the consequences are felt soley by those who choose to engage in such activities. I know..I know the families of those who go overboard in this behavior suffer too but with that logic I can think of a whole list of things to ban from sky diving to snow boarding to shopping on line. Only those who choose to remain associated or dependant upon the abusers of these freedoms need suffer, especially in a modern culture where women have many job choices and are not dependant on the man for their sole lively hoods. Most of these vice laws were passed back in the past in a sexist culture where women had little choice if their supporting mates were squandering the family budget on such things.

Do you really think that removing the drugs will cause criminal gangs to pack up and go home? They will simply trade in something else or people or even more dangerous drugs.

It would go a long ways. Sure they could move on to something else. But that something else might very well be legal also. For example, the mafia moved into legal businesses like unions, salvage, garbage disposal, recycling, insurance, construction and other stuff.

    This is a good discussion...

I think that drugs can successfully be legalized, but it would require a lot of forethought. For example, drug companies can produce the drugs at lower cost and higher quality. This would eliminate competition from (and between) street drug dealers, and also the consequences of taking drugs made from sloppy chemical reactions.

But if companies are allowed to produce drugs, would they be allowed to market them?

In our current society, drug companies mercilessly pound their products at consumers. Actually, their advertising dollar targets doctors over patients at a shocking ratio. They will host benefit dinners, and other events, even paying for doctors to take holidays! Apparently doctors are no less susceptible to brainwashing than the average person.

I think that if legalization were to happen, companies would have to produce the drugs AT COST to undercut drug dealers and be carefully watched in their business practices.

    Cello,

I dont think they would have to do it at cost. They could mark it up 500% and it would still be a lot cheaper. They need to price it so it forces the independent growers and cartels out of business. Columbia would gain some sanity. Speaking of Columiba, many posters claim that the drug dealers would do something else, what pray tell do you think the FARC would do to fund their revolution? Start a pic-a-part? Maybe a chain of 7-11s??? Drugs offer the highest profit by far.

*gasp* (Ok, not really) Are you suggesting that drug companies are 'pushers', among the best in the world??

    Legalize marijuana.

But if companies are allowed to produce drugs, would they be allowed to market them?

If they did, perhaps we'd have ads like:

There are enough problems in society without having drugged up addicts everywhere

this statement assumes that the number of "drugged up addicts" would increase exponentially with the legalization of drugs, which simply isnt true. if someone wants to get their hands on drugs, they will (and do), legal or not.

Drug use is a victimless crime? Are you high right now?

Go and try to sell that to every baby born addicted to crack. Tell the woman whose husband was shot so some idiot strung out on heroin could get the 50 bucks in his pocket to buy another fix. Tell that to the woman raped by the two morons who were so high they thought it would be "fun". Tell that to the families of a bunch of dead teenagers after an acid-trip turned some loser into an assassin in the local high school. Legalizing drugs won't make them less expensive, it won't make them less addictive. Junkies will still be junkies. The only difference is that they'll be committing crimes to feed their legal habit.
