How would you feel if Blair and your government were constantly berated?

It's OK as long as it's us that's doing it.

    The point is well made.

However, Brits always bash their politicians at every opportunity, even the good one's. Remember, we voted Churchill OUT immediately after WW2, probably out of sheer orneriness.

The bashing you see Bush getting from Brits does make me squirm with embarrassment somewhat, as, to me anyway, it smacks of bloody bad manners. There's plenty of Americans who can bash Bush without our help.

In mitrigation, all I can say is that we bash for a pastime and I guess that we won't draw a special protective "No bash" line around the US while we bash everyone else.

I think this is the BIG difference between US and UK politics

The president seems to get (to us) a bizzarre amount of respect, even from his opponents. He isn't properly held to account or made to answer questions like he should be IMO.

In the UK, it's normal for people to criticise and question our politicians.

Would Bush ever be trapped in a hospital doorway by a disgruntled nurse and grilled with the TV cameras watching? I doubt it ... everything is so, well ... so stage managed. Slick big-budget productions.

I think that's why I dislike the US political system so much - the only people who will ever be heard are those with very deep pockets. That can't be healthy.

I'm happy with our politics. Watch the commons on TV ... it's great entertainment !

LOL Simon...I don't do it as much, but used to watch the French Canadian parliament at work all the time....it's funny and rowdy. When you see politicians lash out at each other the way they do, our little flame (political) wars here are nothing. I don't think Americans are used to that kind of talk. I know many here got insulted previously this year with war threads, but debating politics is a no holds barred thing with emotions running high, but for those used to it we know we mean no harm.

Yeru...No one doubts that the Iraqis are better off without Saddam and his associates. Anyone with a sane mind will agree to that. It's the arrogance with which the US has proceeded that alienated many people. In a sense we know it was your revenge for 9/11, just to show you could. But to throw a tantrum the way you guys did gets you little respect, you have to realize that.

I don't think the US lied about Saddam and WMD, but we can say the same thing about most nations, they all have some kind of WMD program. However, I do think the US lied about the threat that Iraq posed to them.

Democracy? The next few months will be very revealing of your motives to be in Iraq. The Iraqis want elections. Will you let them? I don't believe you'll respect their voice. I think you'll find every excuse in the book to stop them from choosing their own leaders just so you can retain power there as long as you can.

    And we all know why.

In my lifetime Presidents use to... they even drove around cities in open cars until one day some one blew a Presidents brains out sitting next to his wife - - his name was Kennedy, and we really liked him.

Political life in Canada always reminds me of the Irish view of politicians, which is that Ireland is a nation of farmers and those who could not succeed at that become politicians. What the average Irish politician hoists way above his Canadian counterpart though is a personality, something scarcer in Canadian government since Trudeau died than a shy hairdresser.
