If apostates were not so vigilant in watching the Witnesses' every move, perhaps the governing body would have tried to drop the dubious doctrines by the back door, like so many others that they have discarded when they did not feel to closely watched (organ transplants, for example).
Possibly, but that's the beauty of it. Instead of covering their mistakes and quietly abandoning morally wrong rules, they are clinging to them to save face (according to your analysis). More proof they are not affiliated with a morally upright god. The GB and JWs are independent adults fully responsible for their own actions. It is not reasonable to blame others for their own bad behavior.

Possibly, but that's the beauty of it.
From the position of someone who does not believe the claims of Jehovah's Witnesses, I cannot see how, subjectively, it is "beautiful" to push the organisation into a position of having to uphold a doctrine that means the objective deaths of many.

But, according to doctrine, cooperating with world agencies, the UN specifically, is being in bed with the Great Beast! Doing this "slowly and under the radar" is deceptive and manipulative.
If only the apostates had allowed the organisation to mellow naturally they would have stated their new open stance to the world in time. But apostates had to come along, announce it to the world, and spoil all that!
This is not "mellowing" as you put it. It is "speaking out of both sides" of their mouth, being two-faced, saying one thing while doing another. It is secretly being just as much in bed with the Great Beast as the Harlot is.

I just dont get it....even if they became slightly more mainstream, none of this changes the basic facts that the WTS has been promoting false prophecies and end-dates since 1879! None of it changes the fact that thousands of innocent children have died through their demented policies on vaccines, organ transplants and transfusions..none of it changes the reprehensible "2 witness" policy towards child abuse. Making some minor cosmetic alterations doesnt whitewash the past anymore than the catholic church should be forgiven for its past atrocities. What are you looking for precisely, "Jehovah's Witnesses Lite" ? I also dont see the evidence they were going more liberal in the 60's, 70's. Those were decades when they were publishing some of their wackiest articles from what I have read.
