I read the Bible regularly, but not daily.

I think a better question is: Can a JW read the Bible through without the WT publications?

Not daily, but often. Several times a week, on top of my research which is usually daily.

well, I don't read it as much as when I was a JW, because I don't have 5 meetings a week forced down my throat...oh wait, there was morereading the WTS publications than the bible.

I do still read the bible, and started reading it again a few months ago. I have been going slow, and enjoying it for what it is...a piece of literature...I don't believe it is "inspired" by God...but I think it has some interesting points to offer.

Have to agree with Cygnaus on the Tao of Pooh...that book is just is beneficial as the New Testament. Now the old Testament is fun to read for all the action (violence, drama, sex, genocide...all the stuff that makes up a good thriller). Numbers and Leviticus...those are not too exciting though....

I think the better question would be this:

"Since you left the Kingdom Hall, have you found yourself applying more of the things Jesus taught, so that you act in more of a Christian way?"

I am no longer in Christian....but since leaving the KH, I act more in a christian way towards others than I did at the hall. Why? Because I have been freed of worrying about being in accordance with the WTS doctrines and heavy burdens. I try to be good to others because it is a good thing to do. Not because I am worried about not living through Armageddon.

Tsk on you Dfed, for talking to us like we are some casts offs that cannot operate with the WTS.

He does have a point. The Bible does have a calming effect when reading certain parts....like the words of Jesus in the 4 gospel accounts and the sermon on the mount Matt. 5.......or some of the psalms and Ecclesiastes. I always like John 11 of the account of Lazarus' death and Jesus' teaching on that.

I am calmed when I read about Gods love and feel though I am dfd and not going to meetings at the KH that I am still loved by a God who still cares for me and understands me. Reading the Bible encourages me to pray.
I am moved to thank God for all the good things in my life right now. The scriptures such as the Psalms can help put words to deep feelings of gratitude.

I used to type all the talks for my elder husband for 20 years. I even helped write many of them, as well as wedding and funeral discourses, as my english skills were better than his. We were a team in that regard. He had limited use of his hands, being a quadriplegic, so I had to also type out all the scriptures. Up on the platform he "faked" turning to the scriptures with the side of his hand and read from our manuscript.

I have so much of Gods word in my heart and on the tip of my tongue I will never forget it.
Jesus said that is where it should be.
He never said you had to read it daily, just love it daily.

read the bible daily? Honestly do you? Or is it collecting dust on a table or shelf somewhere? No not daily, once in a while. I have it on my pocket PC. The program I have is called Quick Verse. I highly recommend it. It has four or five version on it. You can view two versions at once. It also has a dictionary and Strongs on it and lot of other things. I like the New LIving Bible and the New King James. I might add an NIV. I wouldn't put a NWT on it even if it was available which it isn't. The WT lags far behind in what is available for Biblical research. Any Christian bookstore has 1000 times the resources the WT has. Of course JWs wouldn't know that as the boys who run the tower won't let them have a peek. And where do you think they get their info anyway. They steal it, pervert it, print it. As for the reference to Jehovah's organization. I hope your justa funnin us. You really don't believe this do you? Jehovah is not really the God of the Bibles name. It is a hybrid name. One reason as to why it is wrong I have seen pointed out is the hovah part. Let see what Strongs on my Pocket PC has to say about hovah: hovah = ruin, mischief. Not a very good name for God but perhaps a great name for the god of the Watchtower. Cruzanhart made and execellent point a about what is presently accepted as the Bible by religious goups including the JWs. Blame it on the Chatholics. We owe what we have today to them. So if you accept the Bible as the word of God remember what your reading was put together by the Catholic Church. Be sure to thank them. And do it a little more politely than the WT does. Cygnus mentioned the Toa of Pooh as a good read. I think it was a great little book also. I also agree with anewme. You can read the Bible too much and become a little odd.

I used to keep it by my bed for when I had nightmares about demons and i would wake up and be scared to go back to sleep and have another nightmare so i would take the bible and read some of Psalms to calm me down. Now that I am fading.. i haven't had nightmares that were so scary anymore. Does that mean god isn't with me since the demons aren't scaring me anymore?? Ya know.. cause they only torment you to get you away from god and all....(so the meetings tell you)

Since I left the cult, I haven't picked up a Bible at all. I've read it enough and haven't gotten anything more out of it. I view it no differently than I do Aesop's Fables.

At the same time, I know many people who read the Bible everyday and are not so judgemental as I was taught to be while studying w/jw's. It's unfair to group people here like that for leaving a publishing company.

Like many others, I've found more spirituality since I left the man-made muddle of JWs! I try and treat EVERYONE with respect (except for a couple pain-in-the-asses), not just those labeled JWs'. Reading the bible does not render someone more or less "christain". It's the was we live our life.

I only read a book once. Of it is exceptional good I may read it again. The Bible was a very poor read and yet I have read it many times. To read a poor book again and again is a form of brain washing.

I will not read it again. I am waiting for the sequel to see if the author has improved in the last 2000 years.
