Were you ever "rewarded" for your faithful service?
by Jonty Parkin in"rewards" for faithful service sometimes used to come in the most unlikely manner.
to illustrate; the "privillege" of being a young microphone handler occasionally yielded its wholesome dividends of an unexpected nature.
for example, when i was once on microphone duty as a young aspirant ministerial slave, i was rewarded with an edifying flash of theocratic tit when a sister leant forward to give her comment.

I was flashed in fieldservice once, does that count? It didn't turn me on, though, so I guess I wasn't rewarded.
LOVE your avatar... here's one I found that I'm seriously thinking of using one day...

When will the world End?
by Spooner ini was just wondering when the jw teach the world will end?
cuz wasn't it supposed to be in 1914 or something?
-

Yeah, something like, 1879, 1914, 1919, 1925, 1975 and 1984ish, as far as I can remember... They can just call it reinterpret it later, or blame and purge. They have ways of getting around it, tricky bastards.

Uh oh. Is Prince setting an example for witnesses to follow?
by catchthis inhttp://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040504/ap_en_ce/music_prince&e=1
can anyone read between the lines here?
while prince stresses he holds no bitterness, he clearly does not hold the music industry with much regard.

Something tells me he's gonna be pulled into the back room a lot. Then the JC (jehovian council) might get hold of him.

Worried about work :S
by Elsewhere into give everyone a brief history.... i started a 4 to 6 month contract to hire position in early feb. the hope is that i will eventually become a permanent employee.
a few weeks ago i had a little chat with my supervisor asking him how things were looking for me to become a perm employee... he responded that there was currently a hireing freeze that was just put into place and i needed wait.
he added an ominous comment that i could look for perm work elsewhere if i wanted... but added that i was doing a great job.. today i came into work to find two new *perm* employees setting up in their work areas .

Astrology is an imbecilic belief (no dissenting discussion please)
by rem inhow can supposedly intelligent adults actually believe (and waste any time) on this astrology crap?
are they mentally handicapped?
is it genetic?
-
itsallgoodnow
Personally, I couldn't give a flip if somebody believes in astrology or whatever. I don't see the point of resorting to name calling over something like this. It makes me wonder where the "intelligent adults" have gone off to.
And now for our daily fallacy lesson. Which one below (a-j) applies to the following statement ?
How can supposedly intelligent adults actually believe (and waste any time) on this astrology crap? Are they mentally handicapped? Is it genetic? Memetic? Are they the blind follower type that fall for any type of New Age mumbo-jumbo?
a. Fallacies of presumption are unsound arguments because of unfounded, or unproven embedded assumptions.
b. Fallacies of relevance are arguments in which the premises do not bear upon the drawn arguments even though they may appear to do; therefore, this makes them irrelevant.
c. Poisoning the Well: an attempt to preclude discussion by attacking the credibility of an opponent; ?this expression goes back to the Middle Ages, when waves of anti-Jewish prejudice and persecution were common. If a plague struck a community, the people blamed it on the Jews, whom they accused of?poisoning the wells.?
d. Hasty Generalization: drawing conclusions from too little of evidence and often relying on stereotypes.
e. Personal Attack: committed by attacking a person for making an argument, rather than the argument itself.
f. Abusive ad Hominem: a direct attack on a person's character rather than focusing on his or her arguments.
g. Common Sense: an argument is held to be true because of practical truths and common sense. Common sense is sometimes correct, but all too many times all too commonly incorrect.
h. Bandwagon: supporting a claim by stating that ?everyone? believes or acts a particular way.

Astrology, the Zodiac, etc............
by Sunnygal41 ini know that this topic will be a draw to those who are truly interested in this subject, and for those who seem to feel that it is their "duty" to debunk untruth and myth, etc.
in their sphere of life.
let it so be stated that whoever is truly interested in this subject, and in having a "chart" done, etc.

Yeah, maybe Rem's new thread needs to be screwed up now, too. I think a few people should go over there and resume their interesting discussion.

hey everybody! i'm not a christian anymore and i'm so happy about that lol
by Fleur inokay, this is interesting to me.. first a little bit of background on me, i was introduced to jw-ism as a zygote, raised in and baptized at the tender age of 12. i got baptized because my beloved grandfather had just passed away and i was told that if i wasn't baptized i wouldn't get to the new order and i wouldn't ever see him again.
no pressure or anything.... i really truly believed everything for the first two decades of my life.
really started doubting at 25, left at 26 (they df'd me even though i disassociated myself in a letter to the elders first).

How great for you, Fleur!
I know that feeling, even though I have a long way to go before I have severed my ties with the Watchtower, I feel free. Religion is a joke to me now. Now I can make it up as I go along.
