  How do you defend your god's inaction?

  this is a question for those that believe in a god or gods, particularly those described as "all knowing" or "almighty".. how do you defend to yourself that your god has not in any modern situation saved his people from anything?.

  people of all faiths are regularly killed by various natural elements.

  of course, if you knew such a thing was going to befall a person and you could do something to protect them, you would.

  Do you believe that a deity exists that has the power to prevent a tragedy like this? If so, why didn't he?????

  Can't speak for LittleToe, but I would like to answer for me.

  Just because someone can do something, doesn't mean it should be done.

  Do you know what the eventual harm/benefit ratio to the species would have been if there was no earthquake and tsunami? Then on what do you base the valuation system of Good and Bad (morality) if you don't know what the eventual results of action/inaction will be?

  And so, you see loss of life and assume if it could have been avoided it should have been avoided. Yet, you have to admit to being clueless about the eventual impacts of those lives being spared miraculously as weighed against the eventual impacts of allowing a natural disaster to occur. Suppose no one died. Ever. How long would you have a job, a place to live, adequate medical care, insurance, etc? How long would you have food and water? Sewage?

  But, if there is a God, you want to decide not only who should be spared but why they should be spared or you'll declare this God worthless. Does that make sense to you, since you have no concept of the eventual outcomes of any course of action or inaction you take?

  If you start from that perspective, you are bound to arrive at conclusions that establish your initial assumption because you are predestined to exclude anything that would lead outside your paradigm.

  Just want to make sure you know that from the "if" forward is a hypothetical situation presented, I wasn't trying to assert that is your view.

  You pose as a possible way of describing: "if you were to explicitly define God to be all-loving but also all-slaughtering." I do not understand, unless you first suppose that God caused the tsunami/earthquake/etc., how anyone could arrive at an "all-slaughtering" aspect.

  How about this one: "If I were to explicitly define God as love." Now, is there any compelling reason to expect love to prevent a tsunami, even if love can do so? At what point would you say love should draw the line when it comes to keeping people alive/keeping people from suffering. Let's call God "gravity" and ask the same question. I still see no compelling reason for God to act.

  Again, I don't "define" God that way, because as I have said I don't define God. God doesn't fit into my definitions. Nor do I believe God can be reduced to an equation. I understand your desire to do so, and I know what motivates that desire (everything needs to fit the structure of a paradigm, even if it isn't the one you favor) but in my experience this falls outside paradigms and refuses to fit into any. That is why I don't even pretend to be able to prove or justify my belief in God to someone else.

  i know this sounds like a "totally" stupid question and i don't mean to offend religious people but i was talking to two jw's elders the other day at my apartment.

  they came by even though they know i am disassocated and don't want to go back to the wt.

  they think they can convince me that they are the truth and i would go back.

  i remember one of my last talks, it was a bible reading, i was 15, and on crutches.

  i tripped getting up on the platform and took the mic stand with me.

  that was embarrassing.

  who at the top (gb) gets to live in extravagant homes, be driven in limos, take fantastic vacations and buy what ever they want?

  my stupidity maybe showing but where does the gb live, bethel?

  What is a monumental amount of real estate worth? Once it is known that this religion is a load of dingo's kidneys, what will happen to all the Halls that donated money has purchased?

  They and the land they rest on will be converted.

  What about the prime real estate in many countries?

  Converted.

  Into what? These are actual assets. The monetary value is staggeringly large. Maybe these guys are surprised that everyone has played along for so long with them? Maybe they figured the generation change would be the last straw and they could finally retire? Maybe the very gullibility and trust they have indoctrinated into Witnesses has become their own worst enemy?

  How else can you explain the atrocious responses to issues like Associating to the UN/DPI for 10 years? They have to figure out a way to dismantle the ungainly beast they created without getting their asses sued for every dime.

  the discussion on god and why it allows bad things to happen was eye-opening for me.

  as i had hoped it would be!.

  one thing i drew from it is that those that believe in god don't necessarily have any basis at all for that belief.

  But even "more so" is so inadequate. And it takes on aspects that defy explanation (as does love for a child or a mate) but can be felt with such ... intent conjoining of being. And peace! Dammit! Can't do it...language utterly fails to express what I have experienced.

  I can use poetic terms to describe it, but they do no good except as a fleeting frame of reference to something sort of like what somthing kind of like that might feel like. And, I would be very surprised if scientists could recreate that experience for me in a lab. At least not recreate it without long term damage after sustaining the "subject's state" for over an hour.

  I don't think not experiencing something is reason enough in itself to disbelieve it. I didn't experience first hand the Tsunami, nor did I live through the hurricane, and I didn't experience the recent quake. I believe they were real, though.

  I saw was a picture, mind you. Just lighted dots on a screen. But I would be hard pressed to scientifically prove that these disasters took place with the limited data I have available.

  Is there anthropological evidence proving the Nephilim's existence?

  i've had this question is my mind for a while now, but has there been any skeletal remains discovered that could prove the existence of the nephilim?.

  there's so many unanswered questions about these giants - first of all, were they really hybrids?.

  secondly, if the demons could materialise and procreate, how do we not know that they gave their children the same reproductive powers?.

  australian scientists said on tuesday they have discovered more remains of hobbit-sized humans which belong to a previously unknown species that lived at the end of the last ice age.. professor mike morwood, of the university of new england, in armidale, australia, stunned the science world last year when he and his team announced the discovery of 18,000-year-old remains of a new human species called homo floresiensis.. the partial skeleton discovered in a limestone cave on the remote indonesian island of flores in 2003 was of a tiny adult hominid, or early human, only one meter (3 feet tall), that would have walked upright and had a chimpanzee-sized brain.. morwood and his team said it represented a unique species of early humans that evolved to a naturally small size because of environmental conditions and the isolation of the island, which was also home to exotic creatures such as miniature elephants and komodo dragons.. but critics suggested the small hominid was not a new species and was more likely a pygmy human or a creature that suffered from a form of microcephaly, a condition that causes an unusually small brain.. "the finds further demonstrate ...(it) is not just an aberrant or pathological individual but is representative of a long-term population," morwood and his team said in a report in the science journal nature.. chinless wonders.

  you guys probably know about this little gem, but i only recently discovered it... http://earth.google.com/ it's an awesome little program that shows you actual satellite images of much of the world, i can zoom in pretty close on where i live, and big cities are even clearer, check screen shots out.... .
