One thing to remember with thses accounts is that, although they were both written by eye witnesses to the events described, they are from different perspectives. To illustrate; two other people and I all witnesses a car wreck. When the police arrive, the other two will not be giving an accurate version of what occured, or will they?
John was in the bosum position at with Jesus at that feast. That is, right beside him. We do not know exactly where Matthew was. He could easily have been the most distant one at the table from Jesus and the events described for all we know. So that maybe he didn't have that close-up persprective.
It is simple little things like that which are often behind the discreptencies in the Bible that some folks make so much out of.

Jesus Christ! Is this a contradiction?
by observador inthe other day while rereading the scriptures about the last supper, i spotted something that is very interesting.. mathew 26:23 reads:"in reply he said: "he that dips his hand with me in the bowl is the one that will betray me.".
the above doesn't make much sense to me because it implies that one would have to give himself away by doing exacly what jesus said the betrayor would do.
now, look at how john words the same event in john 13:26:"therefore jesus answered: "it is that one to whom i shall give the morsel that i dip".

do you have a DPA?
by doogie inthe terri schiavo (sp?
) case got me thinking about this stuff.
if i became incapacitated, i think all decisions would pass to my jw parents (i'm not married).

Like almost anything else that is a legal document it would be best to see an attorney if you want to make up a Durable Power of Attorney (DPA). The form it has to take varies from state to state, so it is best to make sure that yours conforms to the statutory requirements of your state of residence. It would be worth the money to be sure that the document spells out exactly what you want in the event you are incapacitated.

A Pivotal Date: March 20
by ezekiel3 ini am just giggling myself inside out with the stupid antics regarding the march 20 release of the new org book.. of course, in great irony, only the apostates seem to know what's going on.. meanwhile in the congregations, a excitment tinged with mystery and suspense is tweaking the r&f.
my entire book study was just about begging the conductor for any hint.. to emphasize the surprise, congregations that meet on saturday (march 19) are actually moving their public/wt meetings to sunday just for the event.
just imagine the drool letdown when they find out the truth, that old br.

There is so much useless speculation in that article as presented here that I am glad I won't be there for it. If this qualifies as "food at the proper time" then the poor beggars who will be there are in the middle of a "spiritual famine."

Good answer Jeff!
The elders sat me down in a commitee of two and told me not to marry my fiance. That was 24 years ago and, if you do the math, it won't be THAT long before we celebrate our silver anniversary! Ignoring that arrogant elder was the best decision I ever made!!! -

I am sorry to hear about your Grandfather. I didn't find out about my Granddad's passing until about a year after the fact. They were not JW's just a family that had pretty much disowned us when my dad moved my mom and us kids about 1500 miles away and divorced her. Dad didn't even let us know! So I know how that kind of callous attitude hurts.
Just go and hold your head up high! You are there to show your respect for your dear Grandfather and not them since they will not allow you to share your grief with them.
You are in our thoughts!

I have been very sick with a vicious eye immflamation of unknown cause since early January. We thought at one point that I might lose the eye. That is why I haven't been around much lately. Sadly, it tends to be a recuring thing and this episode is one of the worse I've ever had. The good news is that it appears to be clearing up, though I am holding my breath on that one.

I knew a 13 year old who was declared an unapproved associate (when that was the same as Df'ing.) for fornication. She'd been raped and become pregnant as a result ( a thirty-something-year-old man had literally kicked in the front door to her home while her parents were out and she was baby sitting). The elder who chaired the committee was an old enemy of her family and gushed at the opportunity to Df her and have the whole family shunned as well.

What I remember from 1975
by Big Dog insince i am sort of late to the party this has probably been beaten to death and if it has just kick this thread to the curb.
i was 11 years old in 1975 and i remember being scared silly the whole year.
i mean there was so much hype about it and the tension in the air was so thick it was unreal.

I find it so interesting that the Watchtower gets so quoted proving that nothing was ever said about the end coming in 1975. That overlooks the "pure language" of the WBTS, a different way of understanding language that every JW learns. What is so brilliant about the "pure language" is that it provides the WTBTS a perfectly deniable way of getting its message across to the rank and file while appearing reasonable since the rank and file read what is printed very differently from everybody else.
Those of us who were around then read that material and understood perfectly well the message at the time that the big A was coming in 1975. At the same time the WTBTS never said in plain English that it was going to come and can deny it to this day!
Of course, denial is a common form of coping with things that don't go the way we hope. So the WTBS denies. And so do many who where disappointed and felt like folls. So it is no surprise to me that many deny that 1975 was ever important to them. -

JWs and Clothing
by the_classicist inwhere i live, its not usual for people to "dress up," especially business people and executives, you are more likely to see them with a button up shirt, khakis, and one of those fleece vests on.
so, on the whole, jws look very out of place wearing their cheap suits (though a few elders didn't wear cheap suits and they made that known, "look at this, i got a spot on my new $200 designer shirt" -- really, something like this happened).
but what i did notice is that, in my area, dressing guidelines usually weren't followed, or enforced for that matter, for good looking women.

Try going out on a hot, southern July day in a complete suit! That was the way it was for males in my congo. At times like that, the sisters were a little envied!
