i know my grandmother has these books in her library...and she lives with them, so my mom can look them up and see the "truth.".

She was a nurse, so I think the medical flip-flops along with a few of the doctrines would be the most effective?

Yes, I remember this too. The Smurf tales, the demonized items bought at flea markets, second hand stores, and garage sales.
I remember someone in my congregation telling me the demons through her son out of his crib when they were starting to study. This child would be about 2 years older than me now. I wonder....if he has...any brain damage??? As far as I know he is still in.

well its all happend, got to the hosp early friday morning, had my waters broken at around 7:30am had to wait for an hour and a half to see if labour would begin naturally, it didnt so at 9am i was hooked up to the drip, man that was intense, put it to you this way, blakes labour was about 8 hours all up kaia's labour was 3 hours and i would rather go through the 8 hour one anyday.. it was a very short labour, kaia was born a bit shocked as it happend so fast so she was rushed up to nursery for a bit as she was purple and not breathing properly but after an hour on oxygen she was fine, me on the other hand had to be stitched up coz pushing a 9 pound 1 baby out naturally with no drugs does damage heheh, then i had to be hooked up to a drip for 4 hours as i lost a bit of blood.
but once we were all sorted it was all good.
she is doing so well we are at home now, she is beautiful and very content.

Lonelysheep...I've felt this way too. I've said those very words.
Until I met the most unbelievable man that came into my life. I adore him. He treats me well, my kids well (all 6 of 'em), and we're truly connected. I've NEVER had this before.
I failed at marriages twice. Both JW. This one not. We met 1 1/2 years ago, unbelievably, at a Lou Gramm (Foreigner) concert. He just sat down beside me and started talking. The rest is history.
I NEVER thought I'd do it again, but 3 weeks ago when he proposed I said "YES!" I have no second thoughts. I know we're partners for life. Now it's something I will do again. No dates are set yet. But, the committment itself just feels so comforting.

what strategies work to help them find alternatives?
i have little nephews whose lives could be improved, but i feel powerless, impotent (because of the shunning) to really help in any way.
i know that my sister and even my crazy parents want what's best for the kids, but they don't seem competent to figure out what's best and i doubt i could prove my opinion in court.

When I was "stuck" with my abusive JW husband, one of the best things that someone (one of the kids teacher's) did was call child protection services.
What a relief it was when I was told I had to have him out of the home by 3pm February 22, 1999 or my children would go into foster care. He could not understand why I'd choose my children over HIM!!! He has now served a 30-day sentence and 1 years probation for some of the things he did to us AFTER this happened. What had happened before was worse.
I just didn't understand that what he was doing to us was criminal. I didn't think I had any options, I felt hopeless. The JW's didn't help - even when they saw severe bruising on my son's back from a beating he gave him with a shoe.
My advice is to step in. I suspect that for a while she might be angry with you. But in time, with the help she'll get from people who really do help will eventually lead to a thank you. The kids will thank you, too.
I recently had the opportunity to thank the teacher that reported our situation. She actually teared up and said she'd often wondered if she'd done the right thing. I gave her a hug and assured her - it was if she was an angel to my kids and myself.

She said, that the light got brighter...blah...blah...blah...and that it's what's now that counts. I said in some cases the light just keeps flipping on and off. I gave her a few examples, but she wanted proof. I've got some stuff together, but you folks are so great I'm hoping you can help me get my "proof" altogether for her. I need flip-flops.
She agreet to read it if I mailed it to her so that my father didn't read it.

Anyhow, tonight we had a conversation...AND she wants to know the facts about the "flip flops". She brought up how important it was that the light gets brighter...but I said in some instances if flicks on and off...so now I need your help findin the "proof" to this statement. I've got some together right now..but I know you all can be a resource of valuable infomation.

i remember when i was little and we learned about non-witnesses, and they were portrayed as children-eating, blood-drinking criminals.
okay, i exaggerate, but the connotations were there!.
The questions they asked... Were the lights on or off? Did you use a condom? You did? So you planned to have sex? Where were you? What position did you use? Where did he touch you? How many times did you do it? They asked me that one at least 3 or 4 times throughout the meetings, like they were trying to get me to admit that I'm a dirty whore who did it twice.
Ohhh...yes....I, too have sat through this type of interrogation. I NEVER expected a JC to be so full of personal questions. I mean, what difference does it make...I'd done the deed I'd confessed to. What difference do all the gorry details make??? Actually, this was one of my first "awakening" moments. When they started to ask these crazy questions, I thought, Jehovah knew what I had done, why do I need to describe it to you three human men?
I am thinking that deep down your parents are proud of your accomplishments but are so blinded by the dogmatism of the WTS that they are not able to express it. Someday I hope they will

Thanks to the Witnesses, I have parents who tell me repeatedly that they are disappointed in me and can never unconditionally love me, even though I've begged them for that so many times that at one point I drove myself to the ER because I knew I was going to kill myself. I am financially independent, have bailed them out financially, skipped grades, won a scholarship, have 2 degrees with honors, and I volunteer all over the community
You know what, Sundawn? You know you did the right thing. You're smart. You're caring. You're genuine. You deserve honour!
I can totally relate to the driving myself to the ER because I knew I was going to kill myself. I've done this myself...although never making it to the ER for fear of bringing reproach upon Jehovah's name...oh geeze!!!
I can't say it ever goes away...So far, I still battle this battle every day. But realize YOU are NORMAL and deserve respect. Your family is CRAZY...like mine!
