The fact that not one supposed 'psychic' has succesfully claimed James Randi's prize money tells me that all psychics are frauds. Not one of them can prove any ability whatsoever, under controlled conditions. Until one of these con artists can actually prove an ability I will happily dismiss them for what they are, charlatans.

I do think people can be very intuitive (People can also be very niave on a not entirely un-related note), although not to some supposed spiritual realm that has no quantitative value. The question that I would ask is what does intuitive mean to you? I am assuming you mean some type of spiritual intuition but what does that phrase (or whatever you mean by the original question) mean to you?

Spirit guides? If I hear voices in the night I just bang on the wall and ask the neighours to to keep the noise down! But seriously, anybody who has someone else in their head telling them to say or do stuff needs professional psychiatric help, these sorts of mental disorders are well documented. Of course the other explanation is that they don't exist and that the person is just looking for attention or money.

The dead are just worm food and since all neural activity ceases after death then the dead aren't 'interested' in anything. If you have empirical evidence that this is not true please feel free to provide it.

ever since 911 and the subsequent attacks in bali, madrid, and london it seems that everyone feels they have a licence to criticise islam (they do).

fundamentalist and many mainstream christians deride the backwardness of a religion that creates suicide bombers and 'honour' killers.

of course, it was only a small group of hardcore islamist extremists that carried out these attacks but the whole community has been tarred by them, and perhaps in some sense it is only right that the majority of 'reasonable' and peaceful muslims do accept the part they play in providing the soil for these people to grow in.

I quite like HS' mental health and safety controls, a great idea as long as it was only in place to control cult conditioning and mental cruelty, I have no problem with religions teaching crackpot ideas as long as the members aren't hurt physically or mentally. I feel that life would be somehow less interesting without yec people to laugh at.

Although I also think that religion should lose its charity status and they should all pay tax.

I would say that religous extremism will always lead to an increase in secularism...eventually, but I don't think it is inevitable. Every civilisation so far has collapsed so I think it is niave to assume this one is immune to the possibility. Religous extremism could well play push society towards collapse if it is not held in check somehow.

In short I doubt that Islam and its many problems increase atheism because I doubt that the actions of a religous group can swing whole groups of people to question the existance of gods, individually perhaps they can.

Moon Landings - Real or Fake?

i've always wondered about this, especially recently.

i've always contended that they were real and ignored the conspiracy theories.

but if they were real, why hasn't nasa been able to send a man to the moon since the 1970s?

Maybe they found that we were already there. Some say there was a worldwide flood. And they point to lots of evidence. They say men was more advanced than he is today. The reason the ark was made out of wood is because the trees were bigger before the flood than they are today. And wood is the best material to make a ship out of. Steel cracks under pressure if it is not tempered properly. Any ways the gods destroyed men before the flood. And now we live shorter lives and use less of our brains. At least thats a story thats out there.

2) Idiots say that, because there is no scientific evidence to back up the bible myth of a worldwide flood. They point to "evidence" that has been thoroughly refuted.

4) Yes, there have been bigger trees in the distant past, trees in noah's day were the same size they are now.

5) Is that why modern ships are all made out of wood? Wood is a good material because it floats, but wood requires as much careful preperation as steel does, it also needs more experienced builders since it has differing strengths dependant on which direction you use it.

6) You only need to temper steel if the situation requires it and if you have done something to make it brittle in the first place i.e bend it, harden it etc Steel is not a brittle material and doesn't readily crack, it is a ductile material usually. Which is why modern ships are made out steel and not wood.

7) Your evidence for the statement that the "gods" have destroyed man before the "flood" is what?

8) No all evidence is that we are living longer lives, I can see some evidence that some of use don't use our brains fully but the idea that we only use a fraction of our brains is complete nonsense, although if you have some evidence to back up your claim feel free to present it.

9) Story is about right because you are awfully light on facts.

If you are going to make wild claims then you should have some serious evidence to back them up.

A post from another thread that touched on the subject, seriously anyone who has any doubt that America has indeed put men on the moon should put their tin foil hat on under their dunces cap. Russia would have no reason to maintain a global conspiracy on behalf of it's rivals in the space race. That's apart from the fact that there is not one shred of hard evidence to show that it was faked, every piece of 'evidence' from the tin hat brigade has been so thoroughly debunked it's embarrassing.

Still as I said in the previous thread, I'm happy to read any new 'evidence' that it was faked. I would be intrigued to find out what doesn't add up about the moon landings.

yesterday our family (grandparents, grandkids, aunts, uncles) all went for a two hour drive for a picnic and all day fossil dig.

I really wish that in a discussion about fossil records people would remember that they don't have any theories, they have at best a hypotheses and at worse a wild guess. In a discussion about a scientific subject you really should know the difference between the common meaning and the scientific one.

I can't say that I have seen the particular program in question, in the UK we have a show called "Most haunted" that sounds very similar. I always had difficulty believing that anyone takes these sorts of shows seriously, I mean even if you believe in this stuff you must admit that there is no way they could find these "supernatural" events every time they turn up and switch on the cameras, and yet every week that is what happens!

My own favourite was the episode when Derick Acorah (Most haunted's resident ~~fraudster~~ ahem, psychic) was 'possessed' by the spirit of Margaret of Anjou, strangely the 'spirit' of Margaret had learnt to speak modern day English despite having failed to learn medievil English. She seemed to have mellowed in death since she was quite happy to speak to everyone in a broad northern accent and call everyone luv. Her famous temper tantrums and love of beating servants for the most minor infraction as well as her ruthless ambition also seemed to be absent during her 'possession' of derick.

One can only assume that Derick simply assumes that his audience are too stupid to have read any history books, I understand he has been caught faking stuff before so perhaps it is little wonder.

THE UNIVERSE - What do you now believe about it?

i was watching this documentary on the various galaxies and it stated that the universe is still expanding, planets are being created as we speak.

it also detailed some of the planets within our solar system and some beyond it and speculated how some were favorable for habitation and that some show evidence of having a water supply.

what do you believe about the universe?

There are other places with conditons similar to Earth i.e. liquid water, clement temperatures, where biological life exists. This was recognized by the ancient Greeks, even though they did not have the means to visit those places.

GG, on what evidence do you base these claims? Or are they just your own beliefs?

And their is controversy and doubt as to whether man ever went to the moon. If they did go it seems they took the pictures of the trip on earth in a studio in England where they filmed 2001 a space odesy

There may be controversy in conspiracy theorist websites but outside of the lunatic fringes of society there is no doubt whatsoever that America has landed men on the moon, repeatedly. I have no doubt you have read some website that contains all sorts of 'evidence' of the moon landings being faked, all of which are easily refuted. However, since you have no problem believing that the shuttle does orbit the earth then there is some hope for you. The question that you should ask yourself is this, at the time of the moon landings America was in a cold war with Russia who had embarked on their own space program, why would a country who had everything to gain by debunking a faked moon landing and creating a laughing stock of their great rivals, fail to do so? Why would they do that?

If you genuinely believe it was all faked feel free to present your evidence, I could do with a good laugh.

The thing that always astounds me is that it is usually Americans that are quickest to attempt to deny their country's greatest technological achievement, unbelievable! Personally I think it is one the high points of the twentieth century and something every American should damn proud of, because there isn't another country in the world that has even attempted to do it, thirty seven years on.

I agree with Chameleon as to who the face of boe was referring to.

I always thought that John Simm would make a good Doctor Who himself. The weeping angels was a particularly good episode, The bruising has only just started to go down on my leg and my hearing has almost returned to normal after Mrs Caedes screamed and grabbed my leg during that episode! She still doesn't like me pointing out any statues we walk past! I did suggest she could hide behind the sofa!

I can't wait for next weeks episode, John Simm being evil...woohoo.

Well OF COURSE, BUT, some of you atheist think you can do NO wrong...I just wanted you to WAKE UP out your coma and realize the atrocities atheist HAVE commited.

tophat, I would be the first to condemn any of these atrocities, but the thing that should wake you out of your "I can't believe anybody can be an atheist" mindset is that those atrocities have not been commited in the name of atheism but by tyrants who happen to have no belief in god.

Of course the point that you have failed to address is that the atrocities mentioned by neverending journey were commited by christians in the name of christianity. Not mentioning of course all the on-going wars being fought because a neighbouring country doesn't happen to share your murderous tribal deity.

Personally I am under no illusions that a world of entirely rational people would not have wars, but to use the excuse of a couple of tyrants to justify your own religion's murderous rampages is the kind of excuse I would expect from a child. Perhaps you feel it is justified since christianity has such a long and glorious heritage in the perpetuation of murder and genocide, I mean just look at the old testament for evidence.

Or perhaps, just maybe, it's just that modern day christianity can't be held responsible for the actions of self proclaimed 'christian' murderous tyrants any more than...aaaah what's the point, this will go straight over your head anyway.
