Kent's Tabloid Journalism = lies??
by Kismet inkent has recently undertaken posting more and more 'headlines' fashioned much like those found in tabloid rags such as the national inquirer.
such headlines skirt the issue but rarely are an accurate representation of the real story.. case in point a headlines such as:.
never marry a jw!

A good advert for JWs ?
by Simon incan you believe this guy.... http://www.gopbi.com/partners/pbpost/epaper/editions/today/local_news_2.html.
is he a good advert for jws as 'law abiding citizens' or what ?
although i guess he is just following the example of his leaders in how they think the law applies to them!

I checked in the index of the "Flock" book, but could not find where being "an asshole" by itself is grounds for disfellowshiping. If it were, I am sure that I would have been tossed out the door myself many times over, having been guilty of that very charge.
Irrespective of his official relationship with the organization, it is interesting that such a kook would have more than just a fleeting familiarity with it, don't you think?

This reminds me of a resident of neighboring town who had a beef with the tax officials of that town, and took to covering his house with hand-written signs decrying one injustice after another, most of them replete with scriptural references. In time, his house came to look like a huge bottle of Dr. Bonner's Castle Soap.
The attraction to the Witnesses that this person has goes to show how the organization is like a beacon, not to truth-seekers but to the many odd ducks who just can't fit in and deal with normal society. They give him a rationalization for it, and some wonderful justification for a "me-vs-them" mentality.

Russell as "That Servant"; Re: Dunsscot
by AlanF insince dunsscot claims he's leaving this board, and in answer to my specific request for a committment to answer all replies i might give to his latest replies to my previous dissections of his nonsense he said that he would not, i won't be giving a detailed reply to him.. however, dunsscot's posts contain a number of statements that prove how easily the watchtower society fools the jw community by lying to it, either outright or in so many words.. in this post we will examine a fiction that the society has managed to get poor people like dunsscot to believe with respect to c. t. russell, namely, that russell never claimed that he was "the faithful and wise servant" of matthew 24:45. the simple truth is that russell did indeed believe it.
the fact that he did was printed in the watch tower, and the society itself taught it until about 1927.. let's first look at the context of dunsscot's denial of this important bible student teaching.
in the set of exchanges below, the reader can see that dunsscot is attempting to deny that jw leaders claim to be god's exclusive earthy spokesmen.

The information that Alan provided from the society's publications, substantiated quite well the claim that Russell considered himself to be the "Servent" mentioned in scripture. I also think that "haughty" is an appropriate but mild description of anyone making such a claim.
Perhaps I am missing the point; I am but a simple lad whose own knowledge of Latin doesn't go much beyond my being able to read the menu in a Latin restaurant. Is it that you are simply contending that Russell never used the actual words "God's Mouthpiece" when speaking about himself? A "yes" or "no" answer to this question, with no quotations from philosophers living or dead, will help me greatly.

THE MASTER OF DECEPTION
by You Know inthis is a piece i posted on h20 some time ago.
it was so well-recieved at the time that i thought i would repost it here for your enjoyment.. ______________________________________________________________________.
the uninitiated reader of course naturally assumes that satan would be the master of deception, but in actuality, while he is the malevolent arch-deceiver, jehovah is actually the master.
-
ChuckD
Yes, Joel, Satan does read this forum (on company time, I might add), but You Know is AWARE of that, and that is why he can spring his trap when the time is ready. You know that You Know knows, and he knows you know. Know what I mean?

teejay, the "ex-JW" in Good Standing
by Kent inin the thread help!
!- jt asked to become a mason!, teejay writes:.
an elder's wife daycares my daughter.

I don't know about that, Kent. Even though I am very much an Ex-, there are a few current elders in this town with whom I have a friendly relationship, and have even done business with from time to time. Not being "officially" df/da, I am still in their "gray area" and those who liked me to begin with still do, and those who never did certainly don't now.

I agree with Francoise on this one. People who are predisposed to a negative view of "the world" are the most likely candidates for enlistment. People who have a normal, well-adjusted life are not going to be receptive to the "good news" to begin with - The idea of the Earth being destroyed doesn't strkie them as good news at all.

most HATED thing about the meetings ...
by alliwannadoislive inhey ya'll ... ain't tuesdays, thursdays and sundays even better nowadays ?.
i was wondering what it is that you hated most about the meets ?.
the one thing that used to really rile me was the pressure to control the children - the frowns and the disapproving looks when they were just behaving like normal kids .... the worst of it all for me was seeing any little person being taken outside and hearing the loud slaps even when the door was closed .... what is it that you least miss ?
-
ChuckD
I never looked forward to going to any meeting. I dreaded every one, some more than others. The idea that the rest of the world was doing something more enjoyable while I was there was always in the back of my mind, and it turned out to be true.

Does Anyone Else Remember
by drahcir yarrum init's been a long, long time ago, but i remember as a youngster attending the meetings and there was a huge bulletin board next to the platform and every month they would post the field service statistics on it, i.e.
hours, return visits (back calls), mags, books, etc.. i was wondering if this was common practice in all kingdom halls back in the 50's and 60's and if so, when did the practice end?
given nathan knorr's interest in marketing the jw teachings and putting a guilt trip on those who didn't perform up to snuff this recollection makes sense.

ChuckD
That had to be referred to as an INFORMATION board not a bulletin board, remember? The use of the word "bulletin" was one of those non-issues that they got all atwitter about since the root of the word involves Papal Bull. Months and days of the week named after Gods was ok, but "bulletin".... never.
