check out this paragraph from the article "serve jehovah without distraction" in the april 1994 kingdom ministry:.
time-consuming side issues: some have got caught up in efforts to resolve common problems in modern society.
christians need to avoid becoming involved in the worlds endless debates over social issues or its futile struggles to correct injustices.
Guys,
Don't let this get out of hand. The second paragraph about "Failure to Keep Focus" was written by ME, not the Society. The first paragraph is taken directly from the KM.
I just thought it would be an amusing and fitting exercise to judge the Society in its own terms.

Time-Consuming Side Issues: Some have got caught up in efforts to resolve common problems in modern society. Christians need to avoid becoming involved in the world’s endless debates over social issues or its futile struggles to correct injustices. (John 17:16) All of this is part of Satan’s design to divert attention from the Bible’s counsel and the fundamental fact that there is only one long-term solution—the Kingdom of God.
Now let me add the next paragraph:
Failure to Keep Focus: Sadly, not all have heeded this fine admonition. For instance, a group of brothers in Brooklyn associated themselves with a prominent international organization under the pretext of pursuing human rights issues. They reasoned that the benefits accruing from this arrangement outweighed the compromising of principles. But when their actions came to light, the brothers resigned in disgrace from that organization. Their ability to give a fine witness with "freeness of speech" was damaged. (1 Timothy 3:13) And we can be sure that their hypocrisy did not go unnoticed by Jehovah. What a warning example for all of us!

here's an experience from the june 1, 1995 watchtower that really made me gag (even at the time, i think).
it appears in the article "gilead graduates--real missionaries!":.
next came some admonition by two gilead instructors.
unclebruce,
That sounds like a painful problem. Obviously worldly influence has crept in! Perhaps this could be the subject of a future Awake! article.

Here's an experience from the June 1, 1995 Watchtower that really made me gag (even at the time, I think). It appears in the article "Gilead Graduates--Real Missionaries!":
Next came some admonition by two Gilead instructors. Jack Redford urged the graduates to maintain a positive attitude. He told of a missionary who left her assignment in reaction to some teasing by fellow missionaries. The Scriptures, however, warn us against taking needless offense. (Ecclesiastes 7:9) "Have the right attitude," he exhorted. "Be forgiving of the mistakes and imperfections of others around you."
So, Sister Missionary was teased and left her assignment. Considering a) what a dedicated Witness she must have been to undertake missionary service in the first place b) that she was in a foreign country and probably a long way from home, isn't it reasonable to suspect that the teasing was both extensive and nasty?
Of course, if this had happened to her in some worldly organization, it would just have been an opportunity to quote 2 Timothy 3:1-5. "What else would you expect in this loveless world?"
But, because it involved the Society, the organization and the group representing it could *not* be blamed. If Sister Missionary didn't provoke the teasing, well, she was still at fault for her reaction to it.
Now think about this: Jehovah's Witnesses are already subjected to enough teasing. For not saluting the flag. For not celebrating holidays. For going door to door. The list goes on and on.
Would it really be too much to expect that the one place all Witnesses could be safe from teasing would be in the midst of the "loving brotherhood"?
Apparently it would.

when does the 'dumbth' in this organization hit bottom?.
anybody remember when questions were read aloud before the.
paragraph, during the watchtower study?.
What's this about Ministry School talks being replaced by reading aloud? I haven't heard about this development.
Would that apply to all MS talks, including the instruction talk and Bible highlights, or just 2, 3 and 4?

matthew 24:14. jesus says, this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth, for a witness, and then the end will come.. this work only done by jehovah's witnesses for about 125 years approximately.
they have 6 million preachers concentrated in mostly 20 countries.. lets say they have preached it in all of north america, which is still debatable since there are still a large segment of people who have no really clear idea of what witnesses believe "the good news" is.. even so, just in china and india there are 2 billion human beings who have probably never been preached to even once.
add bangladesh, iran, iraq, saudi arabia, etc and you have at least another billion with the population in these hard to reach countries continuously growing.. how can the end come before jesus's prophecy comes true.
The Society's reasoning on these points is so flawed.
"Just imagine, brothers, if Jehovah had brought the end 20 years ago, millions would never have had the opportunity to come into the truth and gain everlasting life!"
And MANY MILLIONS MORE would not have been doomed to death, of course. But let's not mention that.
As for "we don't actually have to talk to everyone in order for the preaching commission to be fulfilled," that falls down on two counts.
First, who would accept the notion that they'd been adequately informed about ANY subject just by seeing somebody in a suit walk by?
You go shopping for a TV at an electronics store and see the salesman walking by. "Oh good, now I've got all the information about buying a TV that I could need. Whether I do or don't buy a TV, I have to shoulder the full responsibility myself because I SAW the guy." RIGHT!!!
Second, there are millions of people worldwide who have never seen and will never in the near future see a Witness out in service.

as of 11:45 this morning (i had a telphone call this morning with the refernce department person named holly at 212-963-7234), i can tell you that the watchtower has disassociated itself from the united nations dpi!!!!!!.
the dpi is now taking them off the list.
the dpi requested the list removal to be done this morning!!!!!.
Here is the page that describes the responsibilities of UN NGOs:
http://www.un.org/MoreInfo/ngolink/brochure.htm
And here is the list of UN NGOs that (at least until it's taken off) includes the Watchtower Society:

it's easy to document that there have been dozens of derogatory statements about the un in watchtower publications in the years since the society gained ngo status.. we already know that the brothers were not informed about this status.
and in the early 1990's, it would have been considerably harder for the brothers to find out.
why would any of them even think to visit or phone the un and ask, "is the watchtower society in any way associated with your organization?".

As long as the Society maintained a low profile with the UN--which they appear to have done--it's possible that their status could have continued undetected for many years to come.
HOWEVER, the UN DPI must be quite upset with its own failure to thoroughly investigate the Watchtower's views on the UN, which must be at least embarrassing if not completely intolerable to them. They may be considerably more upset than we know--not just bemused.
Presumably any literature that was presented to the UN during the application process involved things like nice Awake! magazines on the environment and women's rights, with nothing more than a discreet "Soon God will cleanse the earth of wickedness and people everywhere will no longer suffer under the tyranny of ______."
Still, the Society publishes so much stuff that it's *remarkable* that not once in the last ten years (until now) did anyone working for the UN thumb through a "hard-hitting" Watchtower article that referred to the "disgusting thing" and the "scarlet-colored wild beast." Especially considering both organizations are headquartered in New York!
I think it's remarkable even though the Society probably occupies very little of the UN DPI's thoughts on a normal day.
Now we just have to wait and see if the Society will a) be disfellowshipped b) disassociate itself c) be reproved and put on probation to demonstrate "works befitting repentance" d) suffer no consequences at all.
And of course, we'll see how they justify their choice in association to both Witnesses and the public at large.

for years, i have really hated the march 15, 1986 watchtower article entitled "allow no place for the devil!
" for its self-righteous dismissal of the possibility that any criticism of the society could be valid.
so i decided to rewrite it and turn some of the society's arrogant ad hominem reasoning around on itself.
bttt for those who missed it this weekend...
