well... i've finally worked up the courage to get an account & start posting on this site.
i've been lurking for a couple of months now, voraciously reading all the, mmm, "delightful words of truth" i've found here.
i'm currently deep in dubdom, so i have to be pretty ambiguous about some personal details, (i'm really paranoid, hopefully that will pass :-/) but my story in a nutshell is: i was born into this religion, baptised in my mid teens, happily married to a wonderful (& thankfully, somewhat open-minded) jw lady, & now, several years later, i'm starting to seriously question some of what i believe.

I'm a newie also, and I know exactly how you feel now.
I stopped attending meetings about 5 months ago and believe me I still have nightmares, I delete all my computer activity and I don't really know why do i do that? My husband and kids support me in my decision, but I think it takes time to really feel free.
2 days ago i received a phone call from an elder that recently moved to the cong i was in.. this elder is the type that feels that he is a big shot!
he gives parts in dc and ca's.. he asked me if he can come to visit, i told him that my husband had to be present and he had to call in advance to make an appointment.. this elder is so obnoxious and treat women as a 2nd class citizens.
any suggestions?.

My husband hasn't been active for more many years.
I think this elder will take me as a personal challenge to show the other elders that he is better than them.
That is why I told him to make an appointment to come when my husband is present because my husband is a nice person but he can get mean if he has to. I already told my husband and he just said "bring them on" I'll take them any time.
I wish they just leave alone.
we were asked if we would volunteer for this important work of asking our bible students or good return visit clients if they could rent a room out to out of town delegates attending the da.
we opened up our home to a nice family and we became friends.
for many years we would visit each other and they would stay w/us when they went to ny to visit relatives.
Few years ago a sister from Japan stayed at my home and all the gaterings were done in my home.
My kids were about 10 and 11 and my husband was not attending meetings.
2 or three years ago they were in need of homes for the Italian delegation to stay and I offer my house again but this time they asked me to come and inspect the house to see if it would be in good condition for them.
They knew how my house looked like!
When they asked me that I told them that I was no longer able to offer my house.
I figured that since my kids were older I was no longer qualifying for that "privilege" (even thought my kids were better behaved than most in the cong)
Figure that Hypocrasy out?

generally, were you treated with respect, kindness and empathy or did the elders treat you badly?

Well, since I never ask them for any advice or called them in the middle of the night to ask them what color shoes I should wear the next day. They never bothered me even if sometimes I noticed that they did not agree with my decisions. I always drew my line on the sand with them.
Now that I haven't been attending meetings for almost 4 months, I have had only one elder visit.
Few phone calls from some sisters, and that's about it.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting that coldness because I was in a fairly good status in the congregation.
Attending meetings regularly, never been in jc's, never been in gosip, but as soon I stopped going to meetings and preaching they forgot about me.
But that's ok I rather not confronting them.

I haven't read all the comments but my point of view on this issue as a mexican is, that we came to a house uninvited, the owner of the house was kind enough to let us stay and work for them, specially in california things are not going well economically so now the "owner of the house" has to make a decision and cut expenses. And they have to start with the visitor.
If we don't like how the owner of the house is running things we can go back to were we came from.
I don't agree with the "demanding" attitude that the activists are getting, they are only putting more pression on the illegals.
On the other hand, if the goverment really wants to get rid of the illegal problem, there is already a law that punishes employers for hiring illegals but they don't enforce it. They don't even need to build a wall or have amnesty just enforce that law and problem solve. But why they don't do it? Because the big corporations contribute a lot of money to campaigns and they want the cheap labor.
okay, so this isn't long-term (i hope) horrible depression, just....a bad couple of days.
i'm taking suggestions on how to pull out of it.

for quick relieve take some paxil or xanax that will make your worries go away, you can recover from your lack of sleep, and then start doing all the other suggested activities.
i feel like an emotional wreck right now.
i am on my way to a third divorce.
i can't put up with my spouse for much longer, he's so dysfunctional.

Like you said .... your kids are turning out ok.
So keep it that way! keep setting good examples for them.
When they see that you don't stay in a bad relationship just for material security or emotional need, their respect for you will grow.
If your daughter was in the same situation as you are right now.. would you advice her to stay or to leave?
I'm sure you would tell her to leave. Why should you be different?
You always have to love yourself a lot and think... Is this what I deserve? if you think you don't deserve that kind of man then get up and leave with no hesitation.
