A question for Jehovah's Witnesses. Please answer.

i am still in good standing so you must be truthful with me no spiritual warfare with me.. it is almost an automatic response that it is not fair to bring up old literature and old teachings when questioning the wt authority and stand.. i present that since the wt still uses references to early years and bases their authority and choseness on events that happend in those early years and the justification is the differences in what they taught and what nominal christianity taught.

based on these facts and the fact that if you disprove their claims to be chosen at that time they have no basis for authority or claiming a chosen status.. do you still agree that it is not fair to discuss this old literature?.

if you answer yes, when were they chosen by god and what proof do you have for that.

i was just reading jwfacts topic about the change in the teaching about "worshiping" jesus, and i wanted to get this off my chest so to speak.. i started a new thread because these comments are not really inline with his thread, nor is this a rebuttal.... .

for some time even since before i got to the point which i did not agree with the wts teachings i have been researching things and this whole thing about people and having their battle about words and meanings seems a little short sighted to me.. i will take the "worship jesus" example (i am not arguing a point either side here).

we have to accept that the english bible was translated from another language (latin, greek, aramaic, etc.. depending on the translation).

Well I was using the worship example as an "example" but since you asked, the text clearly states we should "proskuneô" Jesus so, that is my opinion. The real question is, in this context what does "proskuneô" mean? Which definition of worship is correct if any? If you say we should worship Jesus, what definition are you using and are you choosing that because of personal preference and personal belief or are you seeking to have an accurate understanding of the original writing. I think most people's belief is a partial fantasy based on what they personally want to see or preferr in the text. I think that once a person becomes dogmatic about a particular viewpoint they have gone beyond the scriptures. Does that answer it for you? -r

We have to accept that the english bible was translated from another language (latin, greek, aramaic, etc.. depending on the translation). When translating, translators have to take into consideration the multiple meanings that both the source and target words have multiple meanings.

Proeskuno(sp?) <-----------> Worship

meaning one ---------NE------------- meaning one

meaning two ----------NE------------ meaning two

meaning three =====EQ====== meaning three

meaning four ======EQ====== meaning four

just an example and not a good one.

But what I am saying is that in Greek during the period when it was written in the context in which it was written needs to be understood AND even when translated into english this may not carry the exact meaning of the word worship or maybe only kind of one of the meanings.

I know I may not be expressing this the best way but thus the reason for caution when reading and understanding. lol

I have seen so many battles on the internet about the bible says WORSHIP (or whatever the word in question may be) so you must accept the default definition of the word. When if people would just say "you know, it could mean this or that, just do your best with what you know and keep trying to understand more" a lot of people would have a lot more free time. ;)

Anyway I just wanted to get that off my chest.

Here goes.....

Below is a quote from the "Reasoning Book" under the heading of cross.

The Greek word rendered "cross" in many modern Bible versions ("torture stake" in NW) is stau·ros´. In classical Greek, this word meant merely an upright stake, or pale. Later it also came to be used for an execution stake having a crosspiece.

It states that "In classical Greek, this word meant merely an upright stake"

Now is that dishonest?

Isn't it true that "classical Greek" is generally Attic Greek which was written about the 6th to 4th century BC and was more strict in meaning, but Koine Greek which was the language the NT was written in was less specific in word meanings?

Trying to install 95 WT Library & Need Help

i recently obtained the 1995 wt library cd-rom and have been trying to get it to work.

it took a few attempts to get it to install but i keep on getting an abormal program termination when i try to use it.

i figure there are configuration issues since it's so old.

I got it working on xp in about 10 minutes.

Steps,

Before installing select the setup.exe file on the cd and set compatability mode, Windows95 and check the 3 check boxes below.

Apply

Run Setup.exe

Remember that the install path should have no SPACES. If you want it in program files put c:\progra~1\wtlib_95 or whatever.

After it is installed set the same compatability options on the Main shortcut.

It appears that it won't paste to notepad but will to wordpad, that could just be a weird thing with my machine but I don't have time to test it more.

Just in case you doubt, this is from the Babylon book....

i was reading a little coc last night where ray f. disusses the witch hunt at bethel that resulted in all the oustings.

as i read the doctrines that he questioned, (not judging him right or wrong), i noticed that he was questioning some of the fundamental beliefs of the wt.

I don't know if he was in denial.

As I journy along on my path out I find myself conflicted on many things. I want to scream out what I know sometimes, but know that doing so I would lose alot. I sometimes try to interject logical reasoning and truth into witness discussions without being blatent because I hope eventually ones I care about will wake up. When you get at odds with someone (a jw) you think, "why can't you see this? It is so plain" and they probably think the same thing. It is like trying to wake up some one and they start fighting with you, do you as a wake person fight back or do you try to calm them and help them and kindof look at them a little funny cause they are fighting for no reason.

I tend to think that most of us when we, come to a realization of the real truth, we ask our selves how we could not have seen this before. As the ORG says time and again it is hard to contain these new truths and when people become advisarial with us we are shocked.

I guess it is just hard to understand everyones situation and why they do certain things.

Also the translation of thoughts into words is sometimes difficult, so despite the best efforts of the author somethings don't get conveyed well to all readers.

Well that is just my POV.
