I love my country.
I hate my government.
These are not mutually exclusive views.

Who's to say Jesus has "approved" the FDS and "appointed them..."
by Theocrat in"...over his belongings" ???.
i think the entire system of witness beliefs hinge on this issue: is the governing body the mouthpiece that jehovah is using to lead faithful ones on earth?.
it seems jw's just assume that jesus did inspect them and did appoint them over his belongings.

No surprise, indeed.
Who are you, and what prompted you to mention that I don't know who you are? -

Top 10 reasons:
- Because JWD is a very loving congregation.
- Because over the internet, we can't be put off by your undoubtedly horrible disfiguring condition and hair-curling halitosis. ;)
- Because your elders are too busy interrogating 16 year old girls, in private, about whether or not the boy actually touched their bunny rabbit.
- Because the elders in your congregation do not have the rock-climbing gear or helicopter necessary to reach your remote mountain abode.
- Because you gotta represent, homey!
- Because the release of the recent Harry Potter film have kept your elders extremely busy stamping out new Wicca covens made up entirely of tweenage girls who were formerly homeschooled regular pioneers.
- Because your entire hall is eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage. And they are taking no note.
- Because your area has a Prozac shortage. And that *jerk* means *twitch* that they don't *spaz* have the bandwidth *glaven*.
- Elder: Now, where do you live again, Brother... um.... Brother... Schmarlock? Gwarlock?
- Because your behavior has had a notable lack of sexual deviance. Try autofellating yourself and then posting the pictures on your Myspace. That'll have 'em knocking your door down.

Talk Prayer
by under_believer insomeone posted something in another thread about how prayer is often used to summarize the content of the meeting.
this is absolutely true and is something that always has really bothered me about witness meetings.
jws often use the opening or closing prayer to "teach" the congregation.

What kills me on this issue is my own hypocrisy. Whenever I was asked to publically pray before the congregation, I never did this, I always made my prayers very heartfelt. But...
there was a time when I used "subtle" items inserted into my prayers to manipulate my young daughter. What a crock of crap I was dishing up. -

Governing Body goes out in service?
by under_believer injust curious--is anybody here knowledgable in how much time the various governing body members spend "sharing in the field ministry" after they are appointed?
specifically, going door to door?
i'm just curious, after happening on the following quote from randy's website: .

Well, I personally have gone out in service with Guy Pierce, so I know he USED to walk the walk (and he carried a big stick, too.)
Just curious whether these guys do the d2d thing after being voted into the ivory tower. Insider information would be especially appreciated. -

Just curious--is anybody here knowledgable in how much time the various Governing Body members spend "sharing in the field ministry" after they are appointed? Specifically, going door to door? I'm just curious, after happening on the following quote from Randy's website:
It should be kept in mind, however, that for the most part, the theologians of Christendom do not go from house to house, and many Bible commentators tend to interpret the Scriptures in the context of their own experience. A more objective consideration of Jesus' instruction indicates that he was speaking about his disciples' searching out people individually, either from house to house or publicly, and presenting to them the message of the Kingdom. (Matthew 10:7) Their response would indicate whether they were deserving or not. Matthew 10:12-15.
This is seen in Jesus' words at Matthew 10:14: "Wherever anyone does not take you in or listen to your words, on going out of that house or that city shake the dust off your feet." Jesus was speaking about his disciples' making uninvited calls on people to preach to them. WT 1-1-88, p. 23Anybody? Do those Governing Body members really meet for service, put together car groups, and start knocking? Also, as far as "interpreting scripture in the context of their own experience," isn't that exactly what Governing Body members do? (with a 2/3 majority vote first, of course.)

The singing... uouuhhh.. the singing... I am going to have to sit through that in just two weeks, myself. That song 55, when slowed down to District Convention speed, and slowly moaned out by thousands of people, is anathema to enjoyment. Each syllable is like the stroke of a large-toothed saw, cutting into the base of my skull.

Someone posted something in another thread about how prayer is often used to summarize the content of the meeting. This is absolutely true and is something that always has really bothered me about Witness meetings. JWs often use the opening or closing prayer to "teach" the congregation. This practice is amplified at circuit assemblies and especially district conventions--you'll hear things like this...
"And Jehovah, please help us to realize that the Society is your visible earthly organization. Jehovah, we know that going out in service is part of our worship of you. Never let us fall into the trap of listening to worldly music, Jehovah"
...etc etc ad nauseum.
In speaking with my wife and others, I know that many Witnesses deplore this practice, and it's not just me. Has anybody else here noted this practice? And did anybody else here find this personally offensive, even when they were believing, faithful Witnesses?

Is Watchtowerism "Boolean"?
by metatron inok, a little odd, but how else do you articulate it?.
let me explain: i spent some time with some catholics who are very loyal to their church.
nevertheless, they openly agree that priests.

Real live quote from a JW friend of mine I tried reasoning with on this subject:
"Why do you think that you know better than the Governing Body, who does nothing but study the scriptures for a living? Don't you think that they've already thought of whatever you are bringing up, and would have told us about it if it was important?"
They are willing to put complete trust in the Society, and assume that everything they are telling them is true. They are willing to delegate their conscience and their real study of the Bible to others.
There are many motivations for this... in this particular friend's case, it is laziness (I know him well.) For other people, though, there are other reasons... fear, conservatism, tradition.
