And according to Watchtower dogma, why did sisters get to vote? Doesn't that completely conflict with Paul's misogyny?

remember the proposals from the platform?
usually it was about footing the c.o.
's bill for expenses on his visit, or for paying for floral arrangements for the memorial.

there has been a lot of discussion about the claim that the gb feel they have fullfilled their obligation to preach.. this would be no surprise.
jesus said if you want to really do what is right you need to sell your property and give to the poor.
and then... you could follow jesus.. after pentecost there was an arrangement where an individual could sell his property and give the proceeds to the apostles.
Great topic! So true! The last year I was in (3 years ago approximately) I heard from both from our C.O. and at the Circuit Assembly that "there is no reason to believe that we need to take Matthew 24:14 literally right down to the last individual." No word of a lie. I don't know if that was a local thing but I remember thinking WTF? (Though I wouldn't admit to thinking the F at the time cuz I was a good dubby ). Talk about elitism. I can't remember the topic but there were incredible posts on this board asking the question as to why the Witnesses haven't pushed to get into the mainstream media if they were really interested in making their message global. The most cogent explanation I read hypothesized that it is because they would be put under too much scrutiny, and I agree. They care about numbers, not saving people. Their recent record of changing hourly requirements for not only the elderly but also the pioneers and aux. pioneers shows how much they have sweated to show an "increase" in their ministry, as opposed to the reality of their "revolving door" membership.

they say, wonders never cease, how true.
man has created many things.
being in the construction business for four decades erecting tall structural steel frame buildings, etc, it amazes me how man has built many awesome structures.
Waking up every day.

Remember the proposals from the platform? Usually it was about footing the C.O.'s bill for expenses on his visit, or for paying for floral arrangements for the memorial. But I remember one time it was proposed that we give some of our cong's coffers to our neighbouring cong for renovations, and after the obligatory seconding of the motion one older sister boldy raised her hand singularly in a defiant "nay!" Needless to say as her hand shot up, her name was put on the black-list. I always respected her for that, since I had never witnessed anything but a unanimous vote on any issue proposed from the platform. Was total conformity completely unique to my congregation?

reading posters' comments help me to see that since leaving "the organization", many have gotten emotionally better.
of course, you don't have to be a witness to have dysfunction but feeling the pressure of always being told that we are inferior, that we're not doing enough, can get to the best of us!
looking back, how dysfunctional were you??
I was pretty bad. We had a really oppresive elder body and you could slip up and say "gee" on the platform and be hauled into the B-school for a counselling. I think living in that constant fear caused me to do things that someone in a more open and supportive environment wouldn't even consider doing. I still carry a lot of guilt with me today from that. I think that although many non-dubs are alcoholics for instance, the dub that does have a problem with something like alcohol abuse has more guilt, and that is exacerbated if they try to cover it up (as most do if they care about their position in the congregation) by the added guilt of "hidden sin". The congregation in my experience is a never-ending hamster wheel spent "keeping up with the Joneses", and since that is impossible to do because no one is ever doing enough, frustration and exhaustion ensue as a matter of course. Since admitting these entirely natural feelings would be seen as a sign of one being "spiritually weak" it becomes a vicious circle that would cause even the most well-adjusted to be dysfunctional.

reasons, not excuses -- even valid ones (like, "i was ignorant, depressed, fooled").. yours in the sense that you can still own (to) them -- even though you now know the "answer" was wrong.. this obviously applies to those who became jws -- hence mostly not born-in, although some of the latter might admit to having chosen the jw way for themselves at a certain stage of their childhood or teenage years.. this question is triggered by a previous conversation with purplesofa on another thread:.
i think most of us that came in and not born in were searching.
our hearts were pure in our search.
I agree with Sir82. I was raised in it and baptism was just another part of life that was expected (if you wanted the elders and your parents to stop hounding you). I actually chose the religion after I initially left for a couple of years. I had a panic attack and realized I was now an adult and had no idea what I believed or who I was. So I resumed putting the belief system on auto pilot because that is all I had ever known. So for me it was primarly intellectual laziness and fear.

just feeling a bit fed up.
it's not always like this i know but i'm wondering if life would be far easier for me and my wife if i just drew a line under all my efforts to maintain a relationship with my jw mother, brother and sisters.
all the rejection, judgementalism and condescension gets a bit much after a while.. how many here actually said 'goodbye' to their jw family and can honestly say they did not regret it?.
The relationship we had that was based on JWism was just that
I returned after leaving initally simply to have the comfort of a relationship with my mother, and put up with a lot of emotional garbage and humiliation from the congregation. I rarely see my mother anymore (even though I'm not officially DF'd or DA'd) but when I do it is just as Madame Quixote said, there is a huge "pink elephant" in the room, and I can't bare to see the self righteous "pity" in her eyes. It's too emotionally taxing to do the eggshell dance around her. I also can't stand listening ad naseum to how loving and amazing the society is, without being given the same respect in having freedom to talk about DF'd relatives that I care about. It bothers me, I was a mama's boy at one point, but the hypocrisy and general ridiculousness of the situation bothers me even more.

maybe this has been discussed previously.
sorry if i missed it.
way back when i was younger, the wts always illustrated jesus without a beard.
In paradise restored on earth it would not be out of order if men returned to wearing beards, in perfect fashion, like Adam in Eden.
Then why do they never illustrate men with beards in the pictures of paradise earth? Only the odd mustache can be seen here and there.

i was just reading the convention thread..the wbt$ tells jehovah`s witness`s which hotels they can and cannot stay in..i`ve been out a long time,so this is news to me..wbt$ continues to expand thier control over jehovah`s witness`s..jehovah`s witness`s continue to give up more and more of thier personal freedom to a publishing company.this has continued for as long as i can remember..make no mistake, wbt$ will come up with many more rules for jehovah`s witness`s to follow...what new moronic rules do you see the wbt$ imposeing on jehovah`s witness`s?...outlaw
Don't forget that with the "adjustment" of the new food service (or lack there of to be precise) an accompanying article in the Kingdom Ministry listing recommended foods we should bring for our lunches. "nuts, dried fruits, light foods that will ensure you are refreshed and wide awake for the afternoon sessions." And of course NO alcoholic beverages or large coolers! Also let's not forget the attendants in the hallways waving their "please sit down" signs during the sessions and the "Keep moving" one during the breaks. I always felt like we were cattle being herded when I saw the latter signs. Oh, and take brief notes during the sessions or you will be lost during the convention review at the service meeting a few weeks later.

Second;
I thank all of you for your honesty. Do you think we are really this P.O'd ( ) because we are a little bit anal? I think it is because most of the people I read on this board frequently have a big issue with hypocrisy, and that has helped me personally define what honesty is. I don't post that often (primarily because I've lurked for a long time and then because every point I wanna comment on is usually replied to more eloquently and intellectually than I could.) The point being... Anal or not, I really appreciate being online with you... even if I am only reading posts. The freedom to disagree is a gift I am still unwrapping with a little trepidation. There are few (and far too many at the same time) out there that understand how difficult it can be for someone to be idoctrinated by this Org. Thanks to all of you.
