"chess is evil" article in a long series of nutty moralizing..."
smellsgood: was this due to the pieces being of monarchal and religious ummm..assignment? the bishop?
did they ever speak out about "trivial pursuit" being a 'trivial pursuit' or perhaps get bent out of shape over twister. That crazy wonderful game that legitamizes brother wandering eyes leaning over/brushing up against, or straight up reaching through a sisters legs to reach the dot? I can imagine that pretty well.
IMO clearly the most evil games are cranium, scrabble, or other games that rely on such grossly overrated things such as "intellect" or "knowledge." Since when should 'fun' hurt so much????

I am so ashamed...
by zeroday ingood men have shed their blood on the battlefield of freedom so i might be free.... stood up to tyrany that i and others would taste the sweet smell of freedom.... and yet for almost 30 years i distained these people as enemies of god.
distained their sacrafice as worthless.
i stand here today to ask forgiveness of those who laid down their lives that i may be free.

Just think of all the people who were never dogmatized into that mindset who to this day don't have the appreciation for this that you just expressed.
Even if you came to it late in life, at least you feel that now.
It's always a tragedy when soldiers die, but thank goodness there are those willing to make that sacrifice in the face of tyranny or opression. Respect.

Vulnerable, the JW or the apostate?
by Fatfreek inin my internet browsing i've seldom come across expressions of non-jw's fearing contact with jw's -- as if the jw beliefs would rub off on us, or contaminate us.
on the other hand, during my years-ago meeting attendance and reading of the wt publications this seemed to be a perpetual theme -- be on guard, watch your faith.
it was as if one week away from the meetings would place an irrepairable dent in the witness armour.

"Another point that I noticed is that if a family member ; is sick and in the hospital, even though they were active witnesses, the meeting came first, before visiting them in the hospital! ; Its like choose, meeting=key to everlasting life, or visit relative=you'll miss valuable information which can give you ever lasting life!"
smellsgood: That is excessively compulsory.
"your father is in hospital after suffering a massive coronary,,,so hurry up now, get your sensible skirt on, the meeting starts in 15 minutes! What would Jehovah think if we were to miss the spiritual banquet on a night like this?"
You know, I grew up in what is known as a "parsonage" they are built for pastors, though neither my mum or dad was one. Its just the house was so shabby, the pastors passed on it. So literally we were twenty feet away from a church.
I remember cleaning it, but honestly my family were certainly the most irregular in attendance. Imagine that..
I think the JW's are taught to be scared in their little scared bubble. Once your bubble bursts, you aren't afeared of the outside or others bubbles, out their yonder bubble...

The World (YAWN) Cup

by Stealth453 inmine.... i was about 10 years old, working with one of the pioneers in our hall, and we came across a gentleman that screamed obcenities at us and threatened to kill us unless we left his porch.
i wet my pants.
the pioneer i was with told me that i was a 'weak little witness that brought shame to jehovah for wetting my pants,' and that my punishment would be finishing out the morning's service with wet, piss stained pants.. it was february in toronto.

Ban cigarette production?
by greendawn ingiven that cigarettes are harmful to health why don't the governments shut down the factories producing them?
it's strange how they tolerate them but not marijuana.
smoking costs a lot of money to the health services of all countries, while the tobacco industries make their profits.

Given that cigarettes are harmful to health why don't the governments shut down the factories producing them?
smellsgood: tobacco IS a plant lol, it grows in the earth,, I know you know that though. ummm, look how well that worked with Prohibition back in the day.
Here's what the government figures on this. The ban on alcohol didn't work right? No, people kept on gettin their whiskey on, black market boom, and all that.
Guess what? NO TAXES coming to the government from the sale of these products as a result. The tobacco "sin" tax in this country can be extremely high. It is a HUGE source of revenue for the government, though, like you pointed out at the same time, it does COST money as well due to the health concerns.
Also, perhaps they are letting people decide for themselves.
I know I made my choice to start smoking. Its a really stupid habit.
The state I live in has one of the HIGHEST taxes on tobacco in the nation. A single pack costs from $5-$7 for the regular kinds of smokes.
The logistics of a smoking ban would be incredibly overwhelming.

JW's discourage people with a lesser spirituality
by JH inwhat if a person would be happy to go to just 1 jw meeting a week?.
what if a person found pleasure going out in the field service only once a month?
not everyone is super zealous like many jw's.

"So, instead of bringing all kinds of people to God, they discourage many who don't have the spirtual need to go all out 100%"
smellsgood: I don't think it has anything to do with "spirituality" personally. Its about other things altogether. I would venture to say many who do a WATCHTOWER 100% have that religion for their god.
Its about domination, repition, totalitarianism.
One thing I think is,,they really haven't ever brought ANYONE to God...just to a sad twisted "system"
The spirit of the watchtower is a very ugly one. You can see that from the effect it has on people during their time, and if they leave, after.
They have a very odd way of talking about it, actually, I've noticed that alot. They treat it as something like a portfolio, or a resume.
They also brilliantly tie in their pressure points directly to a "greater" spirituality:
field service, study, pioneering, meetings, are you feeling the end coming? etc.
Evidenced as I have seen by labeling one "weak" spiritually if one does not have a certain quota of hours a month or whatever.
This is also a good point why the WT is not Christian. Their works driven "spirituality"

Supressive Persons
by Outaservice inrobert farley of the st. petersburg times recently wrote an article called scientologist's policy toward outcasts under fire which efforts were made to 'squash' the article by that church.. the interesting thing is that jehovah's witnesses were mentioned twice in the article as being similiar in their 'shunning' of dissodents.. in the tampa bay florida area's burgeoning scientology community, members abide by a policy considered by some religious experts as extreme: scientologists declare their outcasts "suppressive persons" (sp's).. another scientology policy called "disconection" forbids scientologists from interacting with a suppressive person.
no calls, no letters, no contact.
an sp is a pariah.
