Are you REALLY sure?

when i was one of jehovah's witnesses i was absolutely sure i had the truth.

so sure i would have been willing to sacrifice anything for my beliefs.

i worked hard at study, meetings, service - even aux.

Jw's, mormons etc....all believe that. The distinction between Christianity and false religions is that since Jesus died for our sins that is enough. Any good works that come from us are a result of that grace not a way to earn the free gift. That is clear in the bible. No one will deceive me about that again. It is freedom. The fear of being deceived should be in you, it will keep you from being deceived again! I am curious about something....I know that you are still unsure about the Son of God, being God. Can I ask you how you rationalize the creatorship of Christ? Do you still view Him as master worker, or Michael or? I am not saying that you must believe in the trinity but I am curious as to how you think about that. love, dj

Hooberus, wow....interesting and sad. I suppose it is a works based salvation for a Muslim. No Christ? Mohammed denies the Christ, interesting that Jesus warned us of those who would teach that and deny Him. Antichrist?

What religion are you now?

i've struggled with wanting to be 'something' mostly probably to fill that hole that was left and to try and belong somewhere, anywhere really.

so i've tried penecostal, presbyterian, united churches but they all seem fake.

i always compared everything to the jw's, and didn't even realize it.

Surely you realize that non-denominational is a denomination, and it is an organized religion. I have a niece who is in that church.............it IS a denomination.

I think that what people mean by saying non-denominational is that there is no connection with a 'title' that sets them apart. They just use "Christian" as their title. Non-denominational churches in Christ are independent of a group of men who make decisions. Christ is the only head and authority. There are many non-denominatioanl churches that teach wrong things too and even some who are rather cultish but there are many that are great, free and loving. It doesn't matter what church we go to imo as long as we are a part of the body of Christ. He is our only judge. I hope that I am misunderstanding what you meant because it sounds like you are grouping non-denominational Christian churches as a denomination. They vary and are separate from each other. What makes them unique is their autonomy. It sounds like you are grouping them all together as if they hold true to man made doctrines, which is wrong. The one thing that they should have in common is Christ and love.

altruism is defined as.

1 : unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others.

Do we only do good deeds because of belief that it will somehow (even down the line) will benefit us, or is there such a thing as complete unselfishness?

That is a heart thing, imho. I believe that altruism absolutely exists in compassion and love.

i don't think she has posted this yet.

mulan called me yesterday afternoon to tell me her dad had suffered a stroke.

i did talk to my dad last night and he seemed to think that grandpa was going to be ok. i had a birthday party with nine little girls all afternoon and was completely out of touch as a result.. i think she could use a hug, don't you?.

Doubting the Trinity and Paradise

i don't doubt the trinity, but again i had a talk with one of my jw friends and he gave me several bible passages which he wants me to explain, most deal with the trinity, and others deal with the belief in heaven.

he says that they show that jesus was less than his father, and was a separate person, and the others state that paradise will be here on earth.

argument: how come no one has seen god, not even jesus?

I agree Star. My mom won't hear me. Whatever the elders say is true no matter what. My dad however, recently listened very intensely when I read Isa 44:24 and Job 9:8 to him from his bible. He asked me if it really says "alone". He went deep into thought for a minute but when I started to attribute creation to Jesus, he looked at me very angrily with the same look that the elders use to give me whenever I mentioned Jesus for longer than they thought was necessary. I thought it was best to just leave my dad with his thoughts about what "alone" means for now rather than push him. I do have to get back to him soon with it though, because I guess he must be rather confused. I can't imagine what he must be thinking. Atleast with the dub thinking he gave some credit to Jesus as the master worker....but now he must be thinking that Jesus had nothing to do with it. Oh, what did I do? I just pray that he is receptive and that I can get some time with him alone. He is very sick with brain cancer and I am hopeful that I can reach his heart with this. I almost feel like it isn't the right timing because of his med's and the confusion that his disease causes but I can't leave him where I did. Any suggestions? I pray that he doesn't freak on me. love, dj

my father passed peacefully at 1:07 am this morning.

i wish to thank you for being so nice to my dad.

How sad. He was such a gentle soul who had much pain in his life. I hope that he is receiving his comfort now. Thanks for the e-mail addy.

Hell

i was recently asked about my opinion re: hell.. as a born-and-raised jw i obviously never believed in hell-fire torment.

actually, i refuse to believe in such a thing.

for many years my favorite response to the idea was "i would rather burn in hell than worship a god who would create such a place.".

I have a book called "Religions in America", it details the beliefs of various denominations. I was surprised to learn that many Protestant denominations teach that hell is a state of being not a literal place. That is not popularly known or atleast not by me....

the canadian city of blainville believes it has the right to restrict how people express their religion in public in order to protect people's rights to privacy in their own homes.. jehovah's witnesses pay $100 for an annual permit for door-to-door visits of a non-commercial nature permit holders can canvass for only two months each year.. read the whole article on http://www.watchtowerinformationservice.org.

I am wondering if jw's would be pressured to go door knocking with a fury during those two months out of the year. That might be worse! They will absolutley see it as persecution. I think that the rank and file would like this to pass. They get 10 months off. I don't see this as the best solution at all.

New World Translation Errors

and, my children thank you, and hopefully my children's children.....lol.. John 8:58 packs a powerful punch that is undeniable. Jesus declared himself to be Yahweh. Which makes perfect sense because of Isa.44:24 and Hebrew's 1:10. We have One Creator who had no help from Mr. Wisdom personified in a literal sense...
