Candace Conti Trial and the Realm of Confidentiality
by DNCall inlike soft+gentle, i just finished reading the trial transcript.
during the process of digesting what i read, i was reminded of a concept that i learned, ironically, during a phone conversation with an elder in the service department.
i dont remember what the issue was that i was calling about but i do remember him mentioning the concept of a "realm of confidentiality.

@wha: an elder told me that if a known pedo moved into the hall, (the example was of one convicted and did his time), the elders would not notify the congregation, parents etc. He said they were told to "watch" the pedo, make sure he never worked in service or were around the children. He also said they gave a special needs talk advising the congo to keep close to the children, watch them, work with them alone in service.
He said that people were confused because they understood there was something "up" due to the special needs talk about being "on guard", but didn't know what they were supposed to be on guard about.
He felt it was a bad policy and just shruggged his shoulders.

Another Cardinal Falls
by designs inthe top cardinal of britian has resigned, cardinal keith o'brien, the archbishop of edinburgh, has given notice amid accusations by three priests that he made 'inappropriate contact' with them.
he will not be able to vote in the upcoming selection of the new pope.
the current pope has accepted his resignation.. like cardinal mahoney of the los angeles archdiocese, cardinal o'brien will be allowed to 'retire' receiving a nice pension and home paid for by hard working catholics.

Did anyone watch the HBO special "Mea Maxima Culpa?"
I had it recorded for several weeks and just took the time to watch it this weekend. Wowzers. Since all the abuse cases crossed RATzingers desk before he was pope, I wonder if the release of the movie may have spurred his resignation a wee bit. There is no denying his responsibility in the handling of the cases.
It's a fascinating watch.

I had a bit of a strange thing happen last month that I wanted to post about, but this is the perfect place.
I still have one JW friend, (looong time friend former roomate), and her husband. We meet once a month or so for dinner and whatever. She has told me many many times we will always be in each others lives, even if she had to do a "don't ask don't tell" with her husband. She even had me promise last year that I would be there when she dies.
Well, we were at the hairdressers last month and our hairdresser asked how my brother (an elder PO etc etc), was, out of the blue. I said I have no idea, I am being shunned. Audible gasp in the whole room. I said he was here a few months ago in my city and he never bothered to contact me. More gasps. We chatted a bit and I stated the obvious, that when people you know your WHOLE life, friends and family, that you did everything with, now treat you like you are dead and never existed, THAT is shunning.
What I thought was strange was my gf looked as if a light bulb went off. Like she never "thought" of it that way, which I'm thinking, "how could you NOT think of it that way!" Prob because her mind doesn't work that way, thankfully.
THEN she says, "everybody asks about you ALL the time." (I'm out 11 years) She never said that before. She tells them we see each other and that I'm happy. If they ask anything else she tell them, "why don't you ask her?" I thanked her and emphasized again, that it's not human to treat people that way. I told her it's ALL about punishment. I need to be punished for leaving. I told her I will never treat anybody the way I've been treated. Ever.
It was a bit of a Twilight Zone episode...

One of the straws that broke the camel's back for me was seeing a person at Disneyland. She was a former JW star, pioneer etc etc. She had gotten involved with a shady type JW, became preggers, then was DF. When I saw her, I didn't know her status...whether she was reinstated or what. I didn't know whether to go up to her or pretend she didn't exist and ignore her. I ignored her and felt terrible, and still to this day, even after so many years.
I decided I would never, EVER do that again. I made up my mind to greet DF'd people I saw at the meetings, telling them I was happy to see them etc.
I feel stupid and embarrassed I ever let my religion override my natural feelings for people. This is a big deal for me and I am verbal about it with JW's. I know I will have the opportunity to say even more as the years go by. I have told many that I refuse to treat people as I have been treated. And I cannot beleive they teach their children to hate their fellowman. I had people take offense to that statement, but it's the truth. They teach their children to do the same thing, to shun and pretend former good friends etc don't exist just because they change their mind or have question. It's despicable.
